I need to clean up some corrosion and have heard that steeping in Coca Cola does the trick. Being canny with my money, can anyone tell me if it has to be the real thing, or if a bottle of supermarket own brand 19p for two litre stuff will do the trick?

I did some measuremens of the PH of fizzy drinks and the cokes did have a low ph, from memory 2-3 but this was 15 years ago. I have tried the diet , original coke and value alternatives and had mixed sucess.

Mostly car parts which I imersed first for a few mins then an hour but usually overnight.

Cleaned off surface rust without removing much of the good material but I usually ended up coating in a rust converter to sort the last bits.

yes, i have used coca cola and it work ! put inside a corroded part of trim tab and after a few days, the parts / bolts were moved very easily !

Unfortunately I did not get any oxalic to do the hull, I just bit the bullet and bought some more Y10. As GlennG says, I have nothing to lose so will try a diet cheapo. Diet to avoid the sugar deposit to be removed.

[/ QUOTE ]If you look at the ingredients of Coke you will see phosphoric acid, which is a common corrosion treatment and 'pickle' for iron and steel. Whether there is enough in Coke, I have no idea, but that's probably where the idea came from.

You can buy phosphoric acid with other chemicals specifically designed for converting rust, pickling and protecting. An all-in-one treatment after wire-brushing. Rust is such a major problem and these treatments (the generic ones, not the branded marine ones) are so cheap, I wouldn't mess about with Coke.
