I have been coiling rope without fuss for years but have just spent a frustrating ten minutes coiling a length of Kingfisher Kingbraid (Halyard braid). Can it really be the case that this particular rope demands a special technique, and if so what is it?

Have you tried to figure 8 it? Braids don't have a handed lay, so the traditional technique of rolling it as you coil usually just makes it twist, Consequently coil without the twist (really difficult when you are used to cable laid ropes) or lay in a figure of eight on the deck.

I have Kingbraid & it is easier to coil if you coil it across your hand allowing coils to drop each side so you are holding the middle of the coil rather than hold the top of the coil.I haven't explained this very well I know.Whe finished you have loops each side of your hand & take turns as usual to bind the two sides together.

Yes, I see what you mean. Similar to an idea I've just seen on a climbing site, whereby the rope is draped round your neck rather than over an arm. Seems to work. Thanks (also to Searush for other suggestion).
