But I would work on the heads smell. It shouldn’t be there at all. Worth finding out what exactly is smelling - if everything else is squeaky clean and it’s well ventilated then it’s often the waste pipe that needs changing. We change ours every couple of years. The usual trick to find out is to wipe the pipe clean, then put a moist bit of tissue on it and see whether that has the pong.

And of course acid and bleach (not at the same time) used regularly.

Also very practical as the grounds are easily disposed of still in the paper filter. I use one of these filters, Size 4 / 1x4 Reusable Plastic Coffee Filter Paper Cone Dripper Maker Brewer 747150453231 | eBay which has a wide enough base to fit over and old Cafetiere so that I can make either a cup full, or a jug of coffes which can be chilled in the fridge and used to make iced coffees

If part of the problem is a powerful smell when you first pump the heads after being away, on a typical Jabsco set-up it helps to leave the pump chamber full of water. Before closing up the boat, empty the bowl completely as usual, then switch to 'flush' and do one stroke to prime the pump, then turn it all off as usual. It really seems to help.

That's the one source of smell it's difficult to eliminate - the best way round it is to add a quick flush to your "opening up the boat" procedure. If you just lean in the door and give it a few pumps, then move on to turning on the gas or putting up the ensign or whatever, by the time you come to actually use the heads the "stale water in pipe" smell will have dissipated.

Because they are both quicker, and both easier, than grinding fresh beans and making coffee by any of the other methods ?

I use coffee bags on my 18 footer, as there isn't really the galley space to be mucking about with grinders and filters. I'll also use them on any occasion when I don't want to be carting around the hardware for "real" coffee.

The Lyons bags I use aren't bad. Not as good as my own roast, freshly ground. But not bad.

I have no experience of the newer instant coffees, such as Azera Americano mentioned above. Have you?

By how many seconds? Takes less than 30sec to grind then time is same as instant. You must really be in a rush...... ;)
Easier? Must be the worlds laziest sailor if making a cup of freshly ground is too much for you.. ;)

Azera Americano looks far too expensive on amazon compared to real coffee.

And serve with lurve...
( also, a pouring thermos type thingy goes down well in the cockpit when sailing and the galley is a bit sloshy-sploshy..
Neutrodol in the loos when you are absent highly recommended ?

just don’t mix them up?
 
for coffee - filter coffee made in a V60 - then the paper goes into the bin. hardly any cleaning to be done. that and a thermos of you dont want to be messing around when underway.

if on a longer passage and too crazy down below for V60'ing, we've tried coffee bags and the posher end of instant coffee -both fine in that situation.

I am also hoping it will mask the boaty toilet smell and with three heads its not easy to keep on top of. I had a look online and it seems you can get 12v coffee machines but just looking for your personal experiences. I also have a small stove top thing at home but it doesn't seem well balanced.

We have fitted a device from these guys: SeaSmart Marine Ltd | SeaSmart Marine Toilet Sanitiser Systems. It really does work stopping the smell from the heads.
Also, for the sea sickness, try some crystallized ginger.
