I am restoring my East Anglian sloop which is built with mahogony on oak with a laid teak deck. For my brightwork, and possibly as a deck sealer, I have been recommended Coelan. Does anyone have any experience of this product ? I would be most keen to hear from you.

Yes. Six years ago I used it as a sealer on Mirelle's teak laid deck. The resulting appearance was odd, and more important it was like a skating rink in the wet, so we put two coats of ordinary Blakes deck paint with nonslip on top, leaving the covering boards bright varnished.

Have not had a deck leak since - honest! We have nice furnishing fabrics on the cushions, we use down sleeping bags and quilts and casually leave clean clothes on board in lockers for months on end. A huge change from the days when was a slave to the bare teak deck and was forever scrubbing it and leak chasing.

Personally I like the look of a painted deck with bright covering boards and bulwarks. Compared to the cost of a new deck there is no contest!

We did use it on some brightwork and it is durable but to be honest I prefer the look of varnish. I have used it on wooden blocks and deadeyes this year as an experiment.

Someone who posted on here a bit ago and who with luck will see you enquiry recommends it for spars if you use very fresh Coelan and thin it.

Be sure to buy very fresh stuff, and follow the makers' instructions precisely, including using a moisture meter.
