Coelan application

I am thinking seriously of going down this road for my teak decks.
Can anyone tell me, how long you have to leave between coats?
Can you walk (stocking feet) on it between coats or do you need to work out some means of reaching the areas without standing on bits.
I only have a few bits of deck to do but if I found them unacceptably slippery could I add a coat of the beaded stuff much later (after giving the surface a light sand say)?

Have a look at this. I intend to use pigmented Coelan on Mariposa's decks with non-slip beads in the final coat. My problem is finding a supplier!

Yes, just hoping for the usual informative contribution from Mirelle! I understand that you can apply coats for anything up to 14 days without sanding and now learn that (as usual with paint jobs) direct sunlight has to be avoided. I guess that I could rig up a sun shade but would like to hit the job over the shortest time span. Hence my question what is the minimum period betwean coats on a warm summers day (but out of the sun) ? Can the surface be stood/knelt on between coats?

Sorry, have been busy fitting out.

First - suppliers - I am not much help here as I get mine through Robertsons Boatyard in Woodbridge through whom I get everything as they are most helpful people (I've even been known to take their advice on where to get a car serviced!) .

However, I recall Lena Reekie, at Iron Wharf, Fambridge, (who put me on to Coelan in the first place, twelve years ago) saying that she has a good deal for supplies now. (Contact her through that OGA.)

Now, overcoating intervals - times. Minimum - on a fine summer's day - very short compared, to varnish.

I've had no trouble going a week between coats. Indeed where I want the best possible effect (on places live caprails and handrails, rather than decks) I advocate going a week between coats, and sanding it between coats.

If you go a long time between coats, sand it and you will have no trouble. At least, that has been my experience.

I would always thin it even on flat surfaces.

Plain Coelan without nonslip additive makes a treacherous deck - fine in the dry, skating rink once wetted!

Many thanks Mirelle for that. Yesterday was the first taste of summer weather this year (in these parts) I was on the boat stripping off the beading betwean cabin sides and deck. A sorry sight was revealed where water had found the cracks and migrated under the beading and into the plywood sides.
Fortunatly mainly just the surface veneer. Plan is to repair these with epoxy, run the coelan right up to the sides and just seal the joint with a sealant bead. At least I will be able to see what is going on.
Yes, I have found varnish a bit of a pain at best being able to do 2 coats in a day.
I willl check the contact for Coelan when I work out what OGA means ((apart from Boss in Nigerian ( Ebo I think))

Sun doesnt affect the setting of coelans, it moisture sets, so a high humidity day, it goes off faster. I agree with Mirrelle about the rest, better thin coats and plenty of them.

How do you pronounce Coelan? I've tried making enquiries about it and people don't know what the hell I'm on about. Is it Coe-Lan like Sebastian Coe? Or is it Sea-Lan. Or Is it Coe-Ay-Lan or Kway-Lan?

Non-Slip

I'm about to get into the Coelan (which I pronounce Coe-eh-lan) mood, hopefully in Woodbridge if all goes to plan. I'm not sure I like the idea of the non-slip beads, though, and have been thinking about other possible solutions.

My intention is to treat the teak cockpit seats and sole which are currently unvarnished. However, neither want to be as slippery as Mirelle suggests they would be wearing Coelan. Is there some sort of modern material that could be applied over the Coelan finish, similar to non-slip deck patches you see on GRP boats, that wouldn't look out of place stuck onto varnished teak? I just have this conviction that the beads would look strange and possibly not come off very easily...

the nonslip beads are very tiny - like fine sand rather than like marbles.
