I have now received a plotter from Lowrance to replace the unit that went kapput.
Also in the box was a notice:
"Your unit has been designed to operate or be stored in temperatures up to 150degrees Farenheight. On extremely hot days, this temperature can easily be exceeded when placed within a few inches underneath a dark boat cover in direct sunlight. This can also happen on an autolmobile's package shelf or dashboard in direct sunlight with windows up.
For the best protection against heat damage to your unit, we recommend you place this product in a storage compartment away from windows or the boat cover when it's not in use"
I have my plotter unit cockpit mounted by the wheel. The fuse blew on a really hot midday in early July. Could the sunlight on the black case have caused the recommended temperature to be exceeded?
