Cockpit Mic Installation

The whole point of the remote command mike is that the man/woman at the hel can use it. If you have spare crew to operate th VH for the helmsperson thedn you do not need the remote mike.

For the record mine is mounted on the table the steering comass is mounted on, on the steering pedestal.

I might add that having been cruising now for over 2 months and nearly 2000 miles the GX1500 and RAM mike is an excellent combination, apart from losing M1 and M2, so the main sEt will have to go back for reprogramming when I get to my destination, though for the time being outside the UK not having M1 &2 is not a problem.

All the way aft (tiller boat) on the inner side of the transom - opposite side to the autohelm - it shares a cable run (high up through the cockpit locker, thence bulkhead, heads, locker, bulkhead, etc) with the flush-mounted GPS antenna (a foot outboard, on the quarter, just out of the way of the mooring cleats) and the ANT200 AIS (on the quarter pushpit rail).

Think thrice, measure twice, cut once.

The ICOM Command Mike, and whatever its Standard Horizon equivalent is, I bet, don't need to be mounted out of the weather. They are pretty weather proof to begin with, and besides that, they dismount to be stored below when you're not sailing. In my opinion, they should be mounted where they are directly to hand to the helmsman.

Ours is mounted directly to the steering pedestal.

The Command Mike is a great thing, in my opinion. Only downside is tendency to push buttons on the top edge of the unit when you're pushing it back into its mount after use.

Thats odd - cos my GX1500 has N1 & 2 ... but yes - excellent bit of kit ...

Did notice a bit of condensation in the RAM display at the weekend though ...

As is ours ... on the steering pedestal (wheel steering gives you extra fixing points!)
Was very handy yesterday whilst going through the lock ... in that I could turn the VHF OFF to allow the helm to concentrate - and he didn't hit anything !!
