Cockpit Enclosures

I've used C&J and they are very good, but pricey. They quoted me for a replacement cockpit tent as the one we have is a bit naff and 'nackered. It really came into it's own new years eve when we were warm as toast.

we have one on our dehler 34 and thoroughly recommend it-when wet and cold gives you area to dump wet gear and keep drier below, when really hot we can roll up the sides and have shade and cool (relative) in the cockpit and finally on a number of occasions 2 of the children have slept out there-ours came with out boat which we bought in holland and is dutch made- our neighbours on the next mooring have a dehler 37 also bought in from holland and with similar cockpit canopy which like ours zips to sprayhood so may be worth checking on dutch suppliers as seems popular there,

If you think an HR tent is good, things get much better on an aft cockpit boat as you generally have more height to play with. Take a look at a Malo, I think they started the proper cockpit tent for sailing boats as a standard fit. The secret on a Malo, apart from having the "targa arch" to stow the tent against, is the metal hoop is mounted on tracks on the cockpit combing. This gives a huge advantage of having different hoop hinge positions for the deployed and stowed configurations, one position rarely providing an ideal solution.

From the proliferation of cockpit tents this year, I guess the majority of spray-hood/cover suppliers will now take on such a project, so it probably depends on your location. A local supplier will be highly desireable as I would guess several visits to the boat will be required for measuring up and trial fits.

In the Solent area, I would add Saunders Sails in Lymington to a possible list of suppliers.

Got one on my Najad 441 .... love it, wouldn't be without it, highly recommend them. Gives you an extra 'cabin' when those below are watching some dreadful TV prog ... you can sit with a coffee, or something stronger, reading your favourite book or sorting out the world with your mates!
But how do they measure them up? My new one fits perfectly ... but there is evidence of measurents, pencil lines etc that were not used in final manufacture .... I'm puzzled .....

Great for giving more space and providing an extra layer of insulation in the winter. I doubt you would get much change from £1000. Most companies that sell sprayhoods will also do cockpit tent enclosures.

I've got one, tends to come into its own in the winter .. or a wet summer.

We dont have a tent, we have a <A target="_blank" HREF=http://212.9.22.183/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=album03&page=1>full on wheel shelter</A> - but the concept is brilliant, and I will really miss it on the next boat. The ability for the family to be warm and dry is really appreciated (indeed they have never ever worn a full set of foulies). For watchkeeping (particularly in the cooler months) it is great -but it is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security, and care has be taken over just how windy it is.

I've got one too and like everyone else, think it's great. Because I don't have much interior volume it adds significantly to my covered space.

Mine is a manufacturer supplied optional extra. However it is made by Schultz Sprayhoods. They have a comprehensive list of standard models, so they may be able to make one without measureing. They can be found here...

Without doubt the single best purchase we have made on our Sadler 34.A cockpit tent plus new sprayhood inc frames and poles etc etc from Abos sailmakers Holland.(cost 1200 quid).Its our conservatory;drying room;spying room; spare bedroom and workshop!
