Evening all,

I am thinking of fitting a set of spray dodgers, but as I intend to do some blue water sailing I want to put the name of the boat on the side of them. What does the team recommend for the letters - sew on or stick on? I think the letters will be at least 18" tall. Where can I source such letters.

As always many thanks for all replies.

I got my dodgers from Crusader sails. They did a great job and also did the name, sewn on. Still going strong after 10+ years. Not sure stick on letters would stay on.

Easiest for me was to use artist quality acrylic paint, two coats with the first one thinned down with a lot of water and the second with just enough water to ease application. The base material was Sunbrella. This was for a friend of mine who sailed the boat from Malta across the Atlantic right up to Newport in several stages taking around two years overall.

The dodgers I inherited with my boat had a very nice italic script which was stuck on. It is now getting very tatty and I've had to sew a couple of the letters back on - I have made new dodgers and there are companies who can supply stick on letters with various scripts but not got round to ordering them(other jobs have taken priority) so still have the tatty dodgers on the boat.

Unless you want a pretty script, sailmakers supply self adhesive lettering - it's the same as they use for sail numbers. The adhesive will e OK for a season, but its better to sew as well for longevity.

Rob.
