Cockpit Cover Colours

Time has come to choose the colour of my new cockpit covers. After being massively let down and time-wasted by Mastercovers, I've found a new supplier and its time to choose a colour.

Boat is a 2003 Fairline Targa 52. Hull is blue with silver highlights on things like engine room vent covers.

The boat currently has standard blue covers, but was considering changing to a grey colour to match the engine room vents.

Any thoughts on the practicalities or aesthetics of such a choice? Anyone happen to have picture of a blue hulled boat with grey covers? Should I just stick with safe navy blue.

My extended thinking was to have the cockpit seats recovered in a grey material in the off-season also.

It surprises me that this is consuming my thinking as I very little interest in the carpets and curtains at home.

Thanks!

How good is the blue hull - few years left, or close to needing a repaint? If the latter I'd go black covers, and then paint the hull dark grey.

Depends where you are, of course, but I've used JB Yacht Services for covers a few times. One other option is Flexicovers, they were the oe for Fairline.

I switched from dark blue a while ago. It looks fine but I thought it was a bit too classic and wanted something more contemporary. My last 3 boats have used black, white or grey instead. I think grey would look great in your case. Or black, if you're likely going to paint or wrap the hull in the near-ish future as jimmy says

We changed to grey covers a year ago (we have a white hull tho') and they look great imo. Nothing impractical about them whatsoever.
Post a pic of your boat and it'll give us a better idea.

:)

We very nearly went for charcoal covers when we had ours replaced with the intention of having the cockpit upholstery recovered in a charcoal fabric as well but in the end stuck with blue.

Will post a picture when I get home... in the meantime, you got a picture of your boat with the grey covers? Would love to see it.

We have all grey covers (saily boat) - full aft closing, sprayhood, sail bag, binnacle, OB cover - the lot. But SWMBO has already decided that with our white hull and grey boot top lines things are too err.. grey and thus a bit dull. So when its time to replace it's all going to be Maroon with contrast stitching apparently!

I am thinking about new covers and I really wanted to go with Black as I think it looks really good, but because my boat has a huge navy blue dash (S42 sports boat) I think black would look a bit daft so I am going to stick with navy blue

There are a couple of boats in our marina sealine t50 amongst others with black fender socks and it looks really nice, my mate has just bought a Targa 47 with the champagne hull and he is having black covers and fender socks which again I think will look ace

don't rush into it make the right choice

We specified geey covers and in the UK, when the light is fading, they dont 'darken down" the cockpit. Downsides for us in Torquay, is that you can see any seagull sh×t that has sneaked theough various bunting /scarers etc, and mould growth is pretty noticeable, but against that at least we can see what areas need the Milton treatment. Thinking of relocating to the med and getting some new covers made and are thinking of going darker but are concerned that may make the cockpit hotter if it absorbs heat. A tough one, but we have a dark grey stripe, so darker grey, charcoal or black should work for us.

We went with a light brown (Fox or Dove, can't remember which one it was). Not the best picture but the only one I could quickly find that shows the covers, taken during the commissioning back in 2012.

Still like the colour but just like Andybav pointed out about grey, it shows all the bird fallout and any mould spots so takes more effort than our navy blue covers on the previous boats

It's a different game in the Med - it's not like the UK where you keep the covers up pretty much all the time except when you're on board and the weather's good enough; in SoF I take the side, front and rear covers out in May, and they don't go back in again until October. So the heat gain from dark covers is negligible in that context.

Wrap the dash.
My thought exactly!
Also I'm surprised people seem to be saying that navy blue covers don't show bird poop. All colours show it I think, except white shows it a bit less. But whatever colour you have you have to wash it off, so the colour makes no difference as far as bird poop is concerned, I think

I would say most boats in our (inland UK) marina have navy blue covers. Exceptions tend to be boats with a red or green coloured hull or bold coloured stripes.
We don't have a particular bird poop problem. Navy blue is quite good at concealing dirt.
I find also dark blue fenders look more acceptable when dirty , compared to white fenders.

What I meant was see it from the inside. However Torquays finest has a white grey "run off" so the streaks blend in with the grey, whereas the black cover on the boat next to us has a zebra effect after an attack
