Cobb's Quay Marina or any surgestions ??

Hello
We looking for a new marina.
I have been to cobbs quay marina, but never in the winter months, is it safe to leave the boat in the water over winter? it looks a little open and exposed and after the recent events at holyhead i am a tad worried.
poole or southampton would fit the bill because of the airport, any other surgestions please? we have a prestige 38s mb.
thanks

Cobbs Quay is safe all year round and most boats stay in for the winter. Biggest restriction is the bridges although that depends on your pattern of usage. Not so good if you just do day trips as you have to manage your time around the bridge opening times, but as a base for more extended cruising to both east or west it is good.

Other things to consider include access by road. Bad from the east, particularly at weekends OK from the west and north but slow because of the poor roads. Not sure that proximity of airports is that relevant as both Bournemouth and Southampton are east so you have to get round Poole, although train service is good from Southampton. not much shore life around the marina but fleshpots of Poole are a 10 minute taxi ride away.

Hello,
I'm next door to cobbs quay at Davis's yard.
Holes bay is sheltered and fine for leaving in over the winter.
The only real issue with cobs quay is access with the two lifting bridges dictating when you can and can't enter the bay.
This is only really a problem at peak holiday times as it does get busy, but is still something to consider.
Overall the area is nice, about 45 min to get to open sea.
Regards
Peter

Very much depends what you want in terms of facilities but Ocean Village in Soton might be worth a look. No lock or bridges and well sheltered. Absolute contrast to Cobbs which is a bit of a walk to anything other than the on site café/bar (good pint but dire food IMHO) in that you are in a city with the full range of food and drink places an easy walk away, very much rural vs city. Oh and you need to go to Hamble or Hythe for fuel and lift out from OV whereas Cobbs has both on site.

I've been at CQ for 13 years. Access via bridges is better than when it was one bridge as it opens basically every hour. Never did that when one bridge. Excellent parking and facilities on site. Friendly staff. Road access covered above. I thought about moving but on balance am very happy when all things considered

Re: Cobb's Quay Marina or any surgestions ??

Agree with the above, it is very sheltered and I have had no concerns leaving my boat in the water.

I have just come back from there this afternoon actually - it was very serene - but funnily enough on arrival to the pontoon there was a notice saying 'We have been advised that the Old Town Bridge will not be opening today' - so basically unless you have very low air draft you are stuck at the marina......although in 3/4 years there I have never known the bridges to prevent access out to sea but I guess this does show that it can happen.

I agree that the food/service at Cobbs Yacht Club is of variable quality and whilst nice to sit out in the garden with a pint on a summers evening, I think this is the part of the on site facilities that lets it down a little. We have had the odd good meal there but as often as not have come away thinking it average at best.

We do one or two of the CQBHA cruises each year which are well organised and a nice bunch of people.

Access to Cobbs by road, for me, is good as we come in from the North (from Wimborne) so 15-20 minutes from home we are on the boat and don't have to battle the traffic into Poole.

Re: Cobb's Quay Marina or any surgestions ??

It may be just that I've only ever been to Cobb's in the holiday season and probably because due to the lack of local eateries leading more to cook and eat/drink on their boats but the people (bertholders) there do seem to mix more and thus the atmosphere seems friendlier than at OV or Mercury.

Do take at a look at Gosport marinas as easy link by ferry to Portsmouth station and all states tide and very short travel time on to the Solent compared to many other marinas. Only downside is Gosport drivers whose cars have no indicators and speed limitators to 20 plus lack of decent local eateries but there is a Waitrose in Alverstoke and plenty of good curry houses.
