Did you have it made or was it off the shelf? I thought of using disposable BBQs like that.
We use our Cobb for camping but on the boat we have one of these... http://www.cchef.co.uk/index.html

Fair enough. The description of the problem makes me doubt it was a genuine Cobb (I don't think there is any foam between the inner and outer skins on a genuine Cobb for one thing) and wonder if you, or as you say your son, were unfortunate in getting saddled with a counterfeit product

This is what we use. Made from stainless steel and takes standard disposable BBQs

I made one from two oven trays, two small shackles as hinges and a Harley Davidson mirror clamp-HD's have 1 inch handlebars so it clips on the rail when we use it.
It, like yours takes a cheapo disposable barbeque.
After seeing a clip on barbie slip around a pushpit rail and dump the half cooked grub into the oggin, I clip ours to a vertical tube. It can swivel, but not tip.
It cost around a tenner for the bits-most were in stock in the house or scrap box.
Ours has the advantage that it can be shielded with the lid against the wind. The lid can be propped up with a S/S motorcycle wheel spoke or left down so it acts more like an oven.
So far so good..................
