I was an engineer in Coe-Metcalfe coasters for a while. Old ships and hard work, 5 hours on, 5 hours off watch keeping system.

On the whole, I preferred deep sea work. Big ships, long passages and seeing the world.

A lovely video of a bygone era. I nearly went down this route as a boy in 72. My mother's fancy man was an engineer on a tug and he got me a job as deckhand to get me out of the house 😁
but I joined the grey funnel fleet because I liked the uniform and I thought it might attract more girls.
