To balance the books.
I had cause to call Humber Coastguard a few weeks ago to assist with a possible developing issue - and they did assist - with added comfort to all concerned. All ended well.
Nothing short of a professional activity received.

According to the MCA contact page, Humber has not (yet?) been borged into the MOC. So you have the same skilled and knowledgeable people as always, and a thoroughly professional response is no surprise.

Had a similar experience with Thames a few weeks ago with a loss of revs and potential engine failure on the Swin Spitway, handled very professionally and reassuringly.

The problems arising at Solent are due to new staff, most of whom I suspect have little knowledge of the sea or the area they cover. I presume other stations still retain experienced knowledgeable staff.

It doesn't balance the books. An emergency response should always be like this.

Where separate stations still exist, they still have good staff. But they are being progressively closed and their functions transferred to Fareham. On the south coast, Fareham use the callsign "Solent Coastguard", but they are a completely new operation, this is not the previous Lee-on-Solent centre expanding, nor an existing team taking on a few new operators.

Centres currently replaced by Fareham:
  • Solent
  • Portland
  • Brixham
  • Liverpool
  • Shetland
  • Swansea

Of the remaining ones, I'm not sure which are scheduled to be closed and which are staying. The details varied a few times with political horse-trading in the run up to implementation and I'm not sure which version ended up being final.

I didn't think Fareham replaced Liverpool.Fareham might be HQ but I think you will find that Holyhead has taken over operating the area that used to be covered by Liverpool. We get lots of Coastguard cons that start " this is Liverpool err correction Holhead coastguard.........."

Oh, ok. I was going by the MCA web page, but it could well be wrong.

I agree.
But didn't want folk to think it was the same everywhere.

Fair enough. And it's not like this all the time either. Even so it's a safety critical service and te errors should be highlighted.

Your new Mercedes sir, why are you moaning only 3 of the panels at scratched the rest are fine.
