Coasguard RIBs \'grounded\'

Does anybody know why these Coastguard RIBs were, in theory, withdrawn from service in June this year? Went to save a girl swimmers life down at Hope Cove and got bo**ocked for taking the boat out. Supposedly some 'Health and Safety' issue with them....

Re: Coasguard RIBs \'grounded\'

Read it in the metro this morning so not to be taken seriously but said it had serious structural damage or something like that to the hull thats why it was withdrawn from service.

Sounds crazy as it was rescuing someone but from the other side if it broke up and 3 people lost their lives where would they be?

I am not taking sides.

Re: Coasguard RIBs \'grounded\'

Yes, I know it's on another thread, but that one doesn't answer the 'why grounded' question. These guys have been using this RIB for a while. They would have known if there was a 'serious structural problem'.

Re: Coasguard RIBs \'grounded\'

Some Googling (clicky) produced a little more info. The boat in question had been inspected by MCGA and had a number of defects including a small crack in the transom, a stone chip on the bottom, and a leak between two of the five sections of the inflatable tube. The MCGA wanted to take the boat out of service for several months from June for repair, but the crew/village funded the repairs themselves.

The MCGA would not accept the boat back into service as the repair had not been surveyed by them, so the boat was still going to be out of commission for the rest of the summer holiday.

Blimey, a stone chip on the bottom of a boat recovered up a beach, eh. Fancy that?

Thanks for that Wiggo - so the Coastguard Management have even more to answer for! - the locals probably did the work themselves to sidestep all the administrative hassle of filling out the paperwork requesting a stone chip be mended before they took the boat out again and rescued people.
Jees!

Re: Coasguard RIBs \'grounded\'

This must be why theres a lack of police vehicles about on an evening some jobsworth has discovered that stone chips are route of all things dangerous

Re: Coasguard RIBs \'grounded\'

Dont they really have a spare standby RIB in Poole they can use ?
Golly gosh with all the dosh they had recently had donated from a Round Britain racer they could buy a new one or two.

Re: Coasguard RIBs \'grounded\'

What I want to know is why does the MCA not have similar procedures to the RNLI i.e. when a boat becomes unfit for duty it is immediately replaced with a relief?
Hope Cove has been left without safety cover for 3 months now and no sign of a replacement boat, a situation which the Chief Coastguard seemed quite happy about in the BBC Spotlight interview I have posted below and in The Lounge.

Re: Coasguard RIBs \'grounded\'

A joke. They should be ashamed.
Good on the guys who saved the girl.
Shame on the MCA office monkeys.

The MCA should kee professional and work on getting the boat back in the water asap.

It's a proven life saver.......
