CO Alarm recommendations

I have no Carbon Monoxide Alarm on my beautiful Ballad - two children, a wife, and no CO alarm, something I am going to rectify as I will be installing some propex heating soon.

What do you recommend? A combined natural gas + CO alarm? Battery operated as oppose to 12V? Any suggestions?

I have a Fireangel model CO-9D. Uses a lithium battery with a "guanteed" life of seven years. Mine in it's third season and seems fine. Easy to fit since obviously no external supply required. It also reads ambient temperature which is a handy little extra. Cannot remember price but no big deal, mine came from B&Q. I also have a Propex heater and the normal set up of a two burner/grill LPG stove.

CO Sensors have a limited life. domestic ones often sealed with no means of even changing the battery. Just bin the whole thing every 7 or 10 years as recommended/ when the thing indicates its time has come

For those reasons IMO not sensible to combine with a LPG alarm......... that can run off your 12 volt system.


Check suitability of alarms for the marine environment.

No recommendations re model but definitely get one!!! I have two and both went off recently when the Marina staff were cleaning the pontoons using a compressor. The exhaust fumes were enough to activate them in my boat - it was a good thing to know and take appropriate action.

I don't know if it's really to be dignified as a recommendation, but fwiw we have a FireAngel CO-9B which seems to work well and was not at all expensive. We test it from time to time: a jostick is what they recommend - for a while the boat smells of the 1970s!

I have a FireAngel CO-9D and also a KIDDE with digital readout (sorry don't have model...it's on the boat).

I MUCH prefer the KIDDE. I like to interrogate the peak CO reading regularly, and also reset it. This is easy (and silent) with the KIDDE. The FireAngel makes an annoying beep-beep-beep whenever interrogated; and in order to reset it you have to go through the 'test' procedure which takes ages. Both actions will deplete the NON-REPLACEABLE battery. The KIDDE uses 3 AA alkalines. Experience indicates each set lasts around 3 years, and of course can be removed if the alarm is not needed for a long period such as over winter.

I have a FireAngel CO-9B and also a KIDDE ...deplete the NON-REPLACEABLE battery...

My CO-9B one uses 2 x normal AA cells, see pic. The CO-9D has a built-in Lithium battery and also has a digital read-out. I think you may have got confused between the two models. Not doubting you that you prefer the KIDDE btw.

I have a Fire Angel CO-9D . Digital readout and a bar graph that mimics the way CO builds up in the blood. Non replaceable battery but it can be de-activated if required.
