Hello,

my name is Thomas, 46 years old and I´m from germany.
So excuse my bad english!!

Because it is a bigger problem to find a mechanic here with experience to CM and specially for QSD-engines, I´m searching now a longer time for the right tools and software.
As I could read here in a thread from 2011, Latestarter1 once said:
"CMD re-launched the VM's as QSD brand when it went common rail in order to address the support issue, however it was never integrated into Cummins Insite service tool, still required new version of Rinda tool."

Rinda Technologies answered me, that there is no support for the QSD´s in his tool!
In the Cummins INSITE tool, I can find only support for bigger QSD´s.

So my question is:
Does anybody of you know a tool/software that can communicate with my engine?
And what do I need this?

It mostly consists me of deleting error messages.

Thanks in advance!

Thomas, a very warm welcome to the forum. I cannot answer your questions directly, but Latestarter1 is the forum expert on Diesel engines. You could send him a Private Message (pm)?
Have you also tried Googling VM? I expect there will be a VM dealer in Germany, but have no local knowledge. You will know that VM is an Italian company, so you could try their website too?

Hello rafiki_ and thank you for welcome.
Yes, I know that the engine is produced by VM. Nor far from me - round about 700km. :)
The website from VM gives no info about any tools/software.

I read last night that Mercury Marine CDS will be the right tool.
Of course it is only for dealers/mechanics.

The problem is that I am with this engine probably an exotic.
Next mechanic is away from me only 45km. He wants 180,- Euros only to buy the right cables.
Next mechanic with cables is 285km away.
I´ve given the last years round about 1500,- Euros only for deleting error messages.
And it will be the same (100,- till 150,-) this time.
Next year when I take the boat into the water I pay again, because I know it from the last years that the messages come back.

All the mechanics in the past dont find any problem. They always delete only the error-messages. When I go out the next time the errors are back.
That's why I want to be able to clear the faults by myself.
You understand?!

Thomas, no problem at all with your English, you put us Brits to shame!

What I said in 2011 still holds good I am afraid, was contacted by owner of boat with pair of QSD 2.0 liter engines few months ago, one engine was a non starter.

350 hp version of QSD 4.2 was on the EP Barrus stand at Southampton last year so was still part of Mercruser line up until recently.

I will find out how the products are being, or not being supported and come back to you.

Sorry for this.

@ Latestarter1
My QSD has only 270hp. This will make no difference - only for your information.

I was calling 10 mechanics the last weeks. Eight from them said only - "I dont touch QSD!"
Basically, I dont understand why because I am otherwise really happy with the engine.
Would be great if you could bring something in experience!

Really? My sister in law was living 5 years in South-Africa.
She says my english is horrible and stupid.
However, she generally live on another planet! :)

One more question - because I cant find a solution for my problem.............

Where can I get information about which sensors are installed in my SmartCraft system.
Specifically, I would consider to install a MercMonitor.
But I find no information, what information can be output. (Not from the MercMonitor - but from the installed SmartCraft System).
Can anybody help me?

Thomas,

Not good news on any front I am afraid.

Once CMD was dead in the water Mercruiser integrated the QSD engines into their CDS (Mercruiser Computer Diagnostic System) which was originally intended just to support gasoline engines. CDS is dealer only package.

Merc Monitor is for gasoline engines only.

Hello Latestarter1

Thank you for your answer.

In the meantime I´ve found the info about CDS and that it is exclusively for traders.
I also cant get it from the "gray sources".

Your statement regarding MerMonitor's interesting.
Yesterday I had a Brunswick-trained technician on the phone.
I spoke for five minutes with him on the MercMonitor. He told me not a word of it that it is not suitable for my diesel!
So many professionals............incredible!

Unfortunately, the documentation for the possibilities of SmartCraft in combination with the QSD 4.2 are not present.
I have everything what has Brunswick to offer downloaded and read.
But the possibilities of the engine with respect to sensors and displays, I find not.
And all the mechanics and dealers contradict each other in their information and statements.
So.........my search will go on..............

Nevertheless many thanks!!
