Clyde Training Centres........advice req\'d

Ok, taking the plunge as a novice, and looking to start sail training later this year for self & swmbo. I fancy doing this on the Clyde and so far looking at Troon.(Scotsail, Gail Sail, Maritime Connection and Sunsail at Largs) We want to start on Comp Crew, but unfortunately, due to work & stuff, we are looking at the first week in October. Is this bad timing? This should also give me the miles to do Day Skipper next spring and I am studying the theory via 'The Complete Course' CD at my leisure.
Any preferences on the above TC's?

Re: Clyde Training Centres........advice req\'d

Dont worry about weather in October, I am Troon based and weather often good then. As you have researched Gael Sail, Maritine Connection,Second Wind Sailing and a new company Clyde yacht charters although Ardrossan based has yacht at Troon also. As I know them all personnally it would be unfare of me to reccommend one single company so pay your money and take your choice but will do OK with any of them.

Had you thought of your introduction to sailing in a nice warm tropical paradise instead?

Spending dosh this year completing refurbishment of 40 year old mobo so hols on the Broads this year(changing engine & gearbox, controls, dash, wiring, repainting etc) I also work overseas, so time this year at a premium. Also I think the Clyde just has to be one of the finest sailing areas anywhere, plus Sunsail for example, £200 cheaper each than my local east coast area.(Ipswich etc.)

Re: Clyde Training Centres........advice req\'d

I have worked for a couple of companies and had one of the best weeks sailing taking a CC/DS course for the National Watersports Centre on Cumbrae in Mid October. Not the warmest but all their boats are eberspachered up! Their boats tend to be a bit newer than the other companies. Have a look aswell at exactly what is included in the price, some companies will have a whip round the crew for berthing charges and schedule a couplen of meals ashore (at the crew's expense) into their provisioning.

Have fun!

Another possibility other than those already mentioned is Westbound Adventures, operating out of Ardrossan. They have two courses running in October.

Have been on courses with the National Centre at Cumbrae myself and my wife has been on the comp crew course with them also - have only positive things to say about them and definitely would be the ones I would use were I going on a course myself

Web site will tell you what courses they have

George, I certainly echo what dwatson and tomgregory say,
Swmbo and i did some training with the National Watersports centre on Cumbrae, And we think they were great. I have also done the VHFDSC course, and will hopefully do some further training with them this year.

On our PB2 course we stayed overnight at the centre in one of their on site Chalets, All included in the price.
The principal Bob Smith is a nice chap, and made us all feel at home in the centre,

If you are up, make sure you look me, so as you can buy me a pint./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Clyde Training Centres........advice req\'d

Thanks Alistairr, it will probably be first or second week in October, but I will be in Glasgow from 30th April to 4th May.

Judging what the ladies are recommending, Steve at Second Wind seems very popular, so 2 trains of thought.

1. go there because the ladies recommend him./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

2. don't go there because the ladies recommend him./forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Decisions, decisions............../forums/images/icons/wink.gif

2 Trains of thought......

1. Go with Steve, and he might help help your misses along, and you may suffer/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif.

2. Don't go with Steve, Go with Bob, and he'll make sure you both do well.(With the Sailing that is)/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Decision, Decisions..... I'm sure they're both as good as each other.
But I'm definately using Bob again/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.

Re your question regarding October.. I did my first ever big boat sailing on the Clyde in October.. the good thing is you get enuf dark to do night sailing/nav which isn't the case during the summer months.. Most of the boats that are used for classes at this time of year have decent heating. It quite often isn't that cold either.

Re: Clyde Training Centres........advice req\'d

I did a day skipper with Ron of Gael Sail. It was a contrast to the other courses I'd done with a bigger school in the Solent. Ron had a vast amount of experience and had tips about all sorts of things. He's a one man band and his reputation is his best advertisement. With bigger schools with freelance temps it can be a bit of pot luck. I shared my time with 4 members of the Glasgow constabulary and had a rattling good time. The only trouble is that the area has spoilt me for other women.

Re: Clyde Training Centres........advice req\'d

It may be a bit late now.

I used to run a school in Troon too, although we￾Lve moved away now. All the instructor know each other well. Both Ron Gael Sail and Steve are excellent. Contray to what some others have said I would recommend them any time over the big centres or companies, you￾Lll get a much more personalised experince.

Talk to them both as they both differnt, and take your choice.
