Clyde "muster"

Plan B, anyone?

Outlook for all UK Inshore Waters for following 3 days:
Strong southeast winds around Scotland and Northern Ireland, with gales or severe gales off western Scotland, will veer south or southwest during Sunday while decreasing moderate or fresh.

Plan B, anyone?

Re: Plan B, anyone?

There's an outside chance we may pop along in Peanuts if the weather forecast is very wrong! The reason Tom26 can't make it is because he's kindly looking after his nephews so we can go sailing without our kids for a change! He certainly picks the weather for his weekends!

Have a good weekend, whatever.

Re: Plan B, anyone?

The Mull of Galloway to Mull of Kintyre including the Firth of Clyde and the North Channel.

24 hour forecast:
Wind: west or southwest backing southeast 3 or 4, becoming variable 3 or less for a time.
Weather: scattered showers, rain later
Visibility: moderate or good, occasionally poor later.
Sea State: slight
Outlook for the following 24 hours:
Wind: southeast 3 or 4 increasing 5 to 7 then veering southwest
Weather: rain or showers
Visibility: moderate or poor becoming mainly good
Sea State: slight becoming moderate or rough

Does not seem too bad except for the "5 to 7" - might have to reef in a bit.

Plan "B" was to take refuge in either Millport (NOT on in a sou'easterly, southerly or sou'westerly) or Largs yachthaven.

Re: Clyde \"muster\"

I would like to make it tomorrow in Booby Trapper but I'm working till 4.00pm. I will try to come along, shouldn't take long from Largs Marina. Will call on 77 to see if arrangements have changed. Bit concerned about the forecast but it seems to be improving all the time. If it's more than a force 4 SWMBO will not be there.

Re: Plan B, anyone?

Personally, I'm not keen on leaving harbour in a 7, but we'll go to Ardrossan in the morning and make a judgement at the time. The 1700 forecast isn't any better:

The Mull of Galloway to Mull of Kintyre including the Firth of Clyde and the North Channel.

24 hour forecast:
Wind: variable 2 or 3 becoming southeast 6 or 7.
Weather: occasional rain.
Visibility: good, becoming moderate or poor.
Sea State: slight becoming moderate or rough.
Outlook for the following 24 hours:
Wind: southeast veering southwest 5 to 7, then decreasing 3 or 4.
Weather: rain then showers.
Visibility: moderate or poor, becoming good.
Sea State: moderate or rough.

Re: Plan B, anyone?

Just got home and checked things out. Doesn't look too good. Thanks for the call, Sgeir, your message was as good as an expensive Metcall job!
Got home to find all family etc. geared up for boat, so we're on, one way or the other.
I intend to get get down earlyish (1000) and the rest will follow in their own good time, we will then make a judgement about sailing.
Plan B, may I humbly suggest to anyone stuck in a marina not a million miles from Ardrossan, might a Schofferhofer-fuelled sing-along-a sea-shanty night at berth D34, overflow to be accomodated chez Sgeir.
But, fingers crossed, we'll sail.

What do I listen for on Ch77? Ruby? Coward Of The County?

Re: Plan B, anyone?

Very still and sunny right now, but high mackeral type sky.

Re: Plan B, anyone?

0531??? What kind of time is that to be up ona Saturday?
I found a forecast I quite liked last night, but it's a site that's seldom correct...

Your 0500 looks acceptable to me. We'll see.

no plan B needed

The forecast wasn't far out after all. Bit bumpy, but very enjoyable for all that. We had a great sail into the wind today. More later............

Re: no plan B needed

Forecast was cock-on, bit lumpy Saturday evening but apart from that not too bad. Well done those that made the trip - pity it was a bit lumpy. You were lucky if you stayed in Kilchattan bay - the trip over to Largs on Saturday night was horrific - What should have been ½ or ¾ an hour or so took me over 2 hours - entered the marina in 25kt winds howling through the marina - allocated berth was occupied, not funny with such a wind dead on my stern - lots and lots of gee gees in astern and fingers crossed - managed (just) to back up a few fingers and grab a vacant berth, TG it was a BIG one. Left Monday morning to head back for Troon (SHMO decided we were not sailing on Sunday even in the evening.

Does anyone have any further word on what happened off Arran on Saturday night? Seems a couple of Red flares were spotted on a bearing of 030° from the Brodick buoys, Arran life boat and Troon Life boat were out (along with an aircraft?) but did not hear if they found anything. Most of the "chatter" was on 16.

Anyway I am sure we will find out eventually.

Right who is calling the next "Clyde Muster" and when?

If it is any more than a F4 next time SHMO says she ain't going. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: no plan B needed

The flares off Arran may have been a false alarm. This is what http://www.troonlifeboat.co.uk/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=74 has to say:

Callout 2nd July 2005 (2)

All Weather Lifeboat Assists In Red Flare Search

At 23:06, Clyde Coastguard paged the lifeboat crew to launch the Trent Class All Weather Lifeboat to assist in a search after red flares were reported near Brodick Bay. Arran Lifeboat requested the launch of the lifeboat to help in the search along with the Arran Auxiliary Coastguard Team. The Lifeboat arrived on scene shortly after midnight and helped search the area around Brodick Bay. At 02:50, after completing the search area given by Clyde Coastguard, the All Weather Lifeboat was stood down and the search was terminated with nothing found by any of the search teams. All units returned to station and the lifeboat arrived back at Troon at 03:30. The lifeboat was the refuelled and made ready for service before the crew left the station to return to their beds shortly after 04:00. [/i]

Re: no plan B needed

Thanks for organising Cliff, sorry we missed you and the others. We set off from Kip and by the time we'd beaten to White Bay on Cumbrae my crew voted overwhelmingly for Largs. Doing hull speed, close-hauled, with 2 reefs in the main and about 4 foot of genny out was fairly persuasive.

Managed to get settled in to a berth just before the worst of it I think, but it was a very noisy night. Set off late morning back up to Kip in what was one of the fastest downwind dashes our 26 footer has known!

Keep us informed of the next one, and I am sure Tom26 would like to come along if it's his turn on the rota!!
