Clyde marinas

From personal experience, many on here may recall. I would not give any recommendation to Troon marina. The town & access to Glasgow etc are great though. pm only if you want further info
Strange as in this thread you cannot praise Troon Yacht Haven enough - what happened to change your opinion?

This is a great thread - we might be following Rosemarine out of Whitehaven too.

We left two years ago!

I think we should compile a league table of 'Marinas that are the least conducive to sailing'.
I think Whitehaven would certainly make the top three.
Oh hang on, Preston, Wisbech, Glasson . . .

Why not try a swing mooring in Millport bay during the summer and a berth in Largs during the winter works out about £1350 a year for a 27 footer

Have you thought about Clyde for the winter. Largs want to charge for a cradle or you have to pay for mast removal, Clyde don't. Their lift out and lift in charges are almost 1.5 times more expensive than Clyde.

Some years ago, I was thinking of buying a bigger boat but decide to see what the costs would be at the various Marinas within reasonable drive time. I plotted all the cost against lengths between 7 and 8 metres. Quite a significant difference is seen as it is important to find out the break points when the rate per meter changes.

My graph of relative costs is (I hope) appened to this post but keep in mind, the costs were based on 2010 prices but the relative costs will be the same.

PS I kept my own boat as could not justify the extra cost per year.

The excellent info keeps coming, thankyou all.
As regards a cradle it wouldnt be needed, the boats a Moody 31 bilge keeler so it is happy to stand alone.

Prthaps it's something to do with this thread - http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=295812

To be fair to Troon, I have had my boat there for six years, and not a hint of any trouble. Good facilities, helpful staff, and very sheltered. Main downside is that it is 15 miles of open sea from anywhere else on the Clyde, and there can be a significant swell at the harbour entrance.

If your a distance traveler the most accessible is probably the new James Watt dock marina at Greenoch at the end of the M8. They are up for a deal at the moment as they are looking for trade but staying put locally isnt very attractive.

We're in Largs and its the most expensive for a reason.

Handy for Millport, Rothsay and the Kyles. But a nice town in its own right with a nice park etc

When we kept our boat at Tignabruaich it was the kids favourite destination. Because of the new M74 extension its probably about 2 and a half hours from the border (legally).

(If you're looking for a mooring, can't recommend Jacks yard - Maramarine - in Tignabruaich enough. very well protected and they'll keep an eye on your boat. Lots of live aways there but its another 2 hours further and worse in the summer on Sunday nights. for the same reason i wouldn't recommend anywhere over the rest and be thankful if you need to be back for school on a Monday - I digress)

15 miles!? Not real open sea maybe ...?? Enough to make you think about conditions but not bail out completely?. Up-clyde of Milport IS more sheltered, but with more freaky hill influenced winds, which can be be quite a shock to the system..
If you fancy going a little afield - west of Kintyre or NI maybe, upper Clyde is much less handy.
Upper Clyde is "convenient access" wrapped up in a price..?

I was wondering how sheltered fairlie is for moorings?
I like the idea of being that far up the the firth but my current insurance provider wont cover Fairlie, is that a common exclusion?

There can be a nasty chop in the Largs channel but the lack of fetch stops anything big building up; my brother had a mooring there last year, much cheapness compared to even James Watt and there is a pontoon at the pier for loading shopping/bags/etc directly onboard.

There are also moorings with watertaxi service at Royal Gourock Yacht Club(you would need to join to get access to use these) and Rhu Marina.

If you can afford Largs it's the best all round - simple as that!

I would agree with this. I selected Largs to base my boat because it offered easy access from the Central Belt, sheltered entrance, reaching conditions in prevailing wind to and from the Kyles, day sail capability to interesting places in all wind directions, easy departure for West Coast or North Channel, good facilities, easy access to Largs by road (car 2 minutes, foot 15 minutes along the coastal path). In fact for the reasons mentioned by the OP. Kip was my other choice but it is nearly always a beat out and down the FoC and its also a lee shore on return. Largs for me for the time being but I will move to a swinging mooring at some point when the convenience of Largs is no longer necessary.

Portavadie is a hell of a trek from Cumbria and not great for kids whose hobby may not be eating and drinking.

Don't disagree its a nice place but maybe not ideal for a young family based in Cumbria.

Great place to sail to from Largs!

I fancy putting the boat on the clyde for a year to give a change of scenery.
Now the problem is i am a bit of a skinflint and my current mooring set up cosst me £0 a year so its gonna hurt a little having to shell out for a berth.

But i know its gonna cost and for a bit of a change i dont mind, so wheres the best value for money with the best sailing, i sail with my very young family so sheltered and not huge distances is the order of the day.

Firstly you state you already use a mooring, so would you be happy using a mooring up here or do you want to use a marina?
I have a hired (seasonal) mooring in Fairlie bay, which is 1/2 a mile south of Largs marina.
It is sheltered in all from S to NE anticlockwise, and lies 1nm east of the Cumbrae island shore so not exposed to open sea from S to NW.
As said only tenable from apr to oct.
You could then winter up in a marina or ashore.
Let me know if you are interested and I can let you have details of mooring opperator.

Are you talking about Fairlie quay or Fairlie bay?
two different mooring areas/companies although anly 100 yards apart.
Fairlie bay more sheltered in certain winds as the quay moorings are further north and west.
See my post below.
Cant understand your insurance dictating where you can or cant moor, who are you with and what is their grounds?

I had been thinking of Fairlie Quay intially while I waitied on joining the YC. I'm really happy with just about everything at ardrossan but the slog up to the cumbraes is begining to drag a bit after 6 years and a change in base would open up more of the upper clyde for day sails. A swing mooring would also be easier leaving and arriving as I'm usually singlehanded.

I'm with yachtline, no reason given, Fairlie was just on the exceptions that came with the agreement same as my previous insurer craftinsure.

It's even further for me, living in the North West.....but, we were talking of facilities. they are by far the best.

Clyde Moorings

Plenty of good advice on offer and perhaps already mentioned. DRB Marine Services of Roseneath on the Gareloch. £475 plus vat for a maintained 6 month mooring in sheltered waters plus facilties such as car parking, dinghy slip and tie up rack, landing pontoon etc. Sheltered waters. Access from Cumbria now improved by M74 bypass through Glasgow on motorway to Erskine bridge. Not too far after that. Trust that you find a suitable marina or mooring.

Why not change to a company that dont put restrictions on where you can moor etc, or ask your company why not Fairlie.
It sounds a bit discriminating against Fairlie to me.
You dont have to be a member of FYC to have a mooring in the bay if you are intending hiring one.
Are you on a sadler 32/4 by any chance?
