Clogged diesel filters - emergency action?

I admire your confidence in fuel set but some of it's claims are a bit extravagant, such as "removing water" which can only be done by magic I suppose.

I believe what it's supposed to do is emulsify the water into such tiny particles mixed throughout the fuel, that it can pass through the engine with no noticeable effect. Whether it actually does this and whether the effect really is unnoticeable I have no idea as I've never used the stuff, but the claim isn't totally implausible.

Indeed - it disperses the water which is taken with the fuel through the engine, some comes back, some goes out the exhaust. But it also breaks up the interface layer between the fuel and water in the tank where the 'bug' grows. This is it's biggest benefit. If you can also remove condensation by keeping your tank full of fuel there is no need to suffer from the 'bug'.
Dirt in your fuel is different, if the supplier has dirty fuel then you will have dirty fuel, likewise if the supplier has 'wet' fuel then you will have 'wet' fuel.

I can't speak for the emulsification, but I can definitely speak for the resolution of diesel bug.

Just an idea...not seen it done mind.....could you not carry an outboard type fuel pipe with the priming bulb in its line and put a cheap in-line fuel filter in it? You know the type, like the ones on outboards or motor bikes? You could buy a pack of them I am sure then if they block after a while just change it over. The bulb would make the bleeding easier too and the pipe could be tailored to the length you need. Remember, its only an escape plan so may buy you enough time to get to safety?

I fitted my boat with a fuel polishing system last fall. The system also allows the on-the-fly switch to another Racor filter and there is a possibility to use a fuel from jerry cans or transfer diesel from one tank to another.

I wrote a story about the fuel polishing to our boating blog. There are also PDF/DWG files with diagrams. Everybody is welcome to use these drawings as a base for their own system.

I also recommend using Mr funnel or similar filtering solution when refuelling. Last week I bought 200l that had about 0.5l of water in it!
