How on earth is it poor management of the river? Should EA be responsible for boaters not managing their boats properly in an unattended lock? I think not. It's even debatable that a lockie should be responsible if a boater ignores instructions when working through (seen it several times...)
Agree with your last point, though!
I'm impressed that EA responded quickly - especially in view of the isolated location of the lock.

We were stuck at Abingdon and was only Boatones information that allowed us to escape today.
In fact the lock was cleared 10pm on the 6th and the ea website at 16:00 today (7th) it still saying it is shut. Total nonsense!.

The EA emailed a notice at 0854 this morning telling everyone that the lock was open:
"Good morning
The sunken boat has been removed from Clifton Lock Chamber and the lock is now open.
Thank you for your patience.

Eye witness reports and pictures (now apparently vanished from facebook) suggested 6" freeboard meets lock gate cross member in a rising lock. All over in 60 seconds.
