Clevis pin nomenclature

I know what everybody refers to, but surely cleft means "to split", so the clevis pin is really the split pin? What say you?

I think the Clevis Pin people were the earliest setlers of North America ariving around the time of the Ice Age hunting mamoths and the like, With there distinctive Clevis Pins from which archeolagists derive thier name.

The "clevis" is the forked end and the "clevis pin" is the thing which goes through it.

Which adds an air of plausibility but doesn't make either of us right.
