Where would I go to buy enough clear sitka spruce for a 23ft hollow mast, these days? Given the wonders of epoxy, it need not be in single lengths but because this is a replica of an old spar with light scantlings it does need to be reasonably good stuff.

A friend said "get Collars to make it - an amateur will never find good clear spar stock", but that was not the answer I am looking for.

Robbins Timber can supply Sitka Spruce. I am planning the construction of a new wooden mast in consultation with a skilled boatbuilder who will oversee the work and we are tending towards Douglas Fir on the grounds that it should be easier to glue and will take varnish better, also (bonus advantage) about 30% cheaper!

The last lot of sitka spruce i bought came from either J Brace & Sons or Burtons, both timber yards were near Brentwood in Essex.
Having built wooden spars from both Douglas fir & Spruce i would say there is no difference in gluing ability but the Douglas fir is much heavier, it is also worth noting that it can be prone to shakes not good for a built up spar, both will take varnish equally well.
As to glue i would use Aerolite 306 still the best spar glue there is.
