Hi guys,

I just thought I'd let you know about my most recent addition to my yacht. I am very pleased with it so thought I would let you all know in case you were interested?

I found a small company called "Plastic Fantasic" who provide a template, cutting and fitting service for plastic. The idea is to protect certain surfaces - chart tables, wooden floors, saloon tables etc. I have had all of this done for my boat, and am so impressed by it. My delicate wooden floor will no longer suffer scuff marks, and my coffee holds itself to the table instead of sliding across and spilling all over the floor.

The beautiful thing about it is that I can see the grain of the wood through the plastic. It's also easy to life up and store if you don't want it there all the time.

Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know, I didn't really know anything about it before I had it but think it's so clever I want to tell everyone! If anyone is interested I'll send you the details of the company - they really seem to know a lot about it (which always helps I suppose...!)

Catch up with you later,

Lucy

Blatant advert?

Looks that way to me. I prefer those that are honest about it rather than create a bogus persona.

Can you confirm you have absolutely no connection with this firm other than as a regular customer, Loopylu? Otherwise, as most deplore the underhand approach, all you will have done is to ensure no-one here will touch it with a barge-pole.

Re: Blatant advert?

Is it wrong to be sincere and pass word of how happy I am with a service I have received? I can't believe how cynical people can be. I found an advert for them in boat international. Isn't that what this forum is for? Sharing information between each other?

Apologies ...

... your sincere recommendation is appreciated. But it is best, specially for someone who doesn't post very often, to make quite clear when giving product information whether or not you have any financial interest or connection.

Your profile says nothing about you. What kind of yacht do you have and where do you sail? Something with a lot of varnishwork, by the sound of it!

Re: Blatant advert?

Quite right Loopylu, and a lot of original ideas are passed on here, and lots of projects aided by the information provided freely by Forumites.

From time to time there are those who abuse the system for their own ends (as with any system anywhere) and I guess that this must make a few of our colleagues a mite touchy. Write it off to experience and enjoy the forum, it can only get better.

Please post company details here as some of us would like to have a look at this. Could be very handy.
Thank you Loopylu

Re: Pretty poor if it was a Blatant advert?

Is it your day to criticise those who may be lack experience?

OK so no profile. But the previous posts would be a pretty amazing cover story.

And then an ad for a firm that doesn't seem to occur at the top of a google search???

Contact details

Thank you for those of you that stick up for others... but I am sorry if what I wrote came across as being an ad, it was not intended as such.

the web site is

www.protectasurface.com - the contact is Niel

Just to say as well I may not come and post here very often but I have been a member since summer of 2003 - when I was looking into buying a yacht.

I now have two to he that asked - a bowman rival 41 and a Halcyon 27. Both of them are beautiful, and yes, there's a little too much varnishing for my liking but it's a labour of love isn't it? I wouldn't do it if I didn't secretly enjoy it!

Sounds like a great product... for a completely dry boat.
I used some of this for non-slip table mats on my immaculate, self made folding cabin table, only to find it was constantly wet under the plastic. It eventually caused the varnish to bloom. I binned it fearing it would act like an impermeable layer over the wood, rather like encapsulating with epoxy.
But there again my boat is wood with wet bilges.

Re: Blatant advert?

Hear, hear Andrew.
Anyone who reads these forums regularily would know the response such postings receive. In addition the post reads like a professionally worded advert rather than the praise of a satisified customer.

As for the product (flexible clear pvc sheet) - I have tried similiar and slung it out. Yes it is nice when new but ..
a) In my experience, it scuffs easily and looks "naff" after a short time
b) It is reasonably "non-slip" when dry but dirt sticks to it "like sh*t sticks to a blanket" making it very gruby
c) In my experience, it is not so "non-slip" when wet so I would not use it on the cabin sole.
d) It does not allow the substrate to dry easily which can result in mould and mildew
e) Lifted the varnish of the chart table.

O.K. in small pieces for tablemats or coasters that are removed and washed or wiped down frequently.

The marina where I am based had "freebies" of coasters (white) and place mats (clear) at one time and the material is readily available (or so I am lead to believe) so this is not a unique product.
