Hi all :)

I am having fun trying to sort these engines and drives out and now as i am i need to remove the AF/paint from the drives as the paint has clocked up the Hex heads.

I have been looking for a paint/AF stripper to clean up these outdrives but all the one si found are not good to be used on aluminium.

I usually use Owlatrol and Strippit on GRP boats, not good for aluminium.

any suggestion please as never cleaned back ally in this way before and dont want to damage anything.

Thanks Captain Faffer :)

I suggest it is best to avoid stripping back to bare aluminium if the existing paint is sound .
The brown staining looks like limescale which soften up using Harpic if required.
Then a light wet sanding if wanting to apply new paint
Don't use antifoul for the hull on the outdrive as the copper content can adversely affect the aluminium . Antifoul spray for outdrives is available.
The hull antifoul should not be brought up to the outdrive but an unpainted margin should be left , again due to risk of issues due to copper in the antifoul.
See the margin on the following picture .

Thanks kida. The main reason is that the paint thats clogging up the Hex heads and fittings. just thinking of an easy way to remove it, Dont want to get down the bare aluminium. It was a concern if it did. Thanks for the info, i hear so many folk aswell using AF on the drives. Ill look at the proper stuff for drives and get that.
