cleaning teak before varnishing

Morning, I'm striping back the manky old varnish from the tiller using a small sander. this has left a few small patches that appear to be water-stained and blackened. Is there an easy way to remove this blackening - will a weak solution of bleach help??

Sounds like you need to scrape it back, use a cabinet scrape, or a piece of glass (mind your fingers).........scrape it back until you have got rid of offending marks, then sand with nothing courser that 240 grit. The cabinet scrape I am refering to is just a flat metal plate, can be got from any decent tool suppliers, ask for a swift lesson on how to sharpen it if you don't know already? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Suggest you don't varnish next time. Use teak oil or one of the wonder equivalents. Save such a lot of hassle when you want to primp it up again next year or so.

Oxalic Acid, diluted to saturation. Apply and leave for ten minutes, scrub with a scrubbing brush then rinse off.

Don't think you can buy Oxalic Acid over the counter, but I have found a proprietry cleaner in the decorating shop which is based on the stuff.

Don\'t ever scrub...

Don't ever use a scrubbing brush on teak! If you must attack it physically, try one of those foam sanding pads - as light a grade as possble.

I had no problem buying Oxalic from a small pharmacy - they had to order it specially, took only a few days.

Teak should be wiped down with the thinners for the varnish you are using to remove the oil. Also probably better to use a varnish intended for teak eg International Crystal for Teak
