I have a grp hull that has been painted with (I believe) 2 pack acrylic, sprayed, some 4/5 years ago. Just above the boot-top has, as usual, become yellowish and grubby. On my previous boat, I used oxalic acid with some success, however, am reluctant to try it on the paint in case I do some damage. Rubbing compound may be a bit too abrasive and likewise may do more harm than good. Any suggestions??

Safe sailing

Using oxalic acid may damage you, but I think is unlikely to damage the boat. Just guard against adsorbsion through the skin by using gloves etc.

Remember to polish and wax after cleaning to delay further degradation of GRP surface.

Using a very fine abrasive polish/compound should be fine, but avoid a heavy cut and avoid using high speed buffing. The answer it to start in a discrete area and be careful, but it should be fine. Dare I say it our abrasive polish would probably be perfect

i use harpic limescale remover toilet cleaner its blue so you can se where youve put it on leave for about ten to fifteen mins, and you will se the stains disapear then rinse of probably best to wear gloves and take care not to splash eyes my boat is painted with two pack and ive cleaned it this way for six years now Kieron

Hi Kieron, thanks for the tip, that certainly sounds worth trying, also has the merit of being v.cheap! Is this the old style powder or something newer? If powder, presumably surface should be wetted first?

no its not powder its gell so easy to apply do not dilute as any amount of water seems to stop action best on a dull day (stops it drying to quick) it costs app 96p at good old tesco and i do my 30 footer with one bottle
