Mine are a bit grubby but I'm wondering how to clean them without damaging the waterproofing. Any practical advice?

The jacket has a couple of small black grease marks which on any other clothes I would remove with Swarfega before washing. OK on the oilies?

After washing is any re-proofing needed

Depends a bit on the materials and value. A posh new goretex suit vs old oilskins. So worth reading the labels and / or googling the washing advice for the particular suit (if a recognised brand).

Surprisingly some types really benefit from being tumble dried on gentle heat. We recently washed and reproofed an aging Musto goretex suit. Not yet tested in really wet weather but seems to have survived OK

Musto recommend Grangers - have used that and seemed to work ok. As in they are clean and don't leak.

one thing to remember - when taking them out of the washing machine, they may trap a lot of water in folds, pockets etc which then falls out when you pull them from the machine.

It is very funny when that water goes all over the cat that has been begging for food but your children will think you are mean for laughing at the cat.

Allegedly of course

buy the Gill Cleaning stuff works well although tipping in Silicone after a wash worked like-new on the hatch covers last year. I am debating testing my Helly Jacket in for a Silicone Dip. The stuff you put on dents :-)

I have never had much luck with the proprietary stuff. I just give mine a soak in hand hot water in the bath for few hours then a hose down with the shower. It seems as soon as any detergent gets near them it ruins the water repulsion of the Goretex or whatever.

Thought about re-waterproofing with silicone building waterproofing stuff. Not sure if it might flake off with time. Be interested if anybody has done this.
