Reading the other post about fitting these reminded me.
Mine has a 'screw on' cap for sealing the hull fitting when removing the transducer for cleaning. This is a pain to align on the threads and lets in more water than I would like.
Is this the normal stopper Nasa supply and if so has anyone come up with a better solution.
I'm sure I've seen other manufacturers that use a dummy transducer.

Yes, the screw on cap is the normal fitting supplied.
As I said in my previous post today, if you can lean the boat over, the pressure of water coming in is greatly reduced and if you make a coffer dam that will hold all the water.
If I am unable to list the boat over, I pull the transducer out, put a ball of cloth in the hole and hold it, whilst crew clear the paddle wheel, I then remove cloth and slip transducer back in, 2 to 3 pints of water in coffer dam.

Had a variety of log - speed brands over the years. They seem to have this common weakness -just have to learn to be quick and that the boat will not sink with a few litres of water in her. Also that kettle scale remover, or white vinegar [acetic acid] can be very good for removing the small barnacles that seem determined to make their home on the paddle gizzmo.

old transducer

I tend to agree with you, the dummy plug is the best as it is easy to plunge into the skin fitting and therefore lines up the screw thread nicely. Also means that the water has stopped once the blank plug is in and before the screw part is tightened.

Try and get your hands on an old transducer might be the best option if the amount of water ingress is an issue for you.

I've used a tapered wooden bung. My speed log paddle wheel is fitted inside one of my forepeak lockers which is water tight and the sides are above the waterline. If i did have a problem it's very reassuring to know that the water would only get into the locker and nowhere else. This may be by accident or a clever bit of planning /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
