I've been told by the bloke that built my new pride 'n joy, that under no circumstances should I use an ammonia based detergent to clean the gelcoat. He says I should use dish washing liquid because ammonia will make the gelcoat turn yellowish.

What do you use to clean your pride 'n joy?

I can't imagine that the proprietory GRP cleaning products contain anything that would damage the GRP. However, I use Bio washing up liquid on all areas of our boat with good results. Seems to leav a nice shiny surface on the sides and gets the dirt off. If it can clean the pans after my wife has cooked with them then it must a pretty good cleaner! Also, being Bio, I assume that I'm doing the water no harm in letting it go over the side.

We use that "Hull Cleaner" by StarBrite, based on oxalic (sp?) acid and its seems good stuff, no ammonia i think... Black Streak remover is pretty good as well.

Y-10 does for the tuff stuff too, but you wont need it on a spanky new boat!

Ammonia is an aggressive agent to use for cleaning - its why it is used !! In diluted forms.

As my boat is not so new ... I use Cilit Bang Lime and Rust remover .... does it a treat ... only thing is because it cleans so far back to the grp .. ie takes of all polish - it is necessary to polish up after to stop dirt / grime clinging to that bare surface.

I posted photos of my manky boat having the CB treatment a while back ............ and showed the difference it made ....

I also never give the boat a proper clean unless I'm in a position to polish soon after. I usually use a Starbrite cleaner, sometimes supplemented with a German product "anti-gilb" by Yachticon which is like Y 10 but easier to apply. Some marks only come off when I apply polish which seems to dissolve out oily stains including the greying around the exhaust.
