Cleaning carpet lining on board ?

I believe borax is now only available to Professional Polluters in The Yook
That seems to be the case in the EU. A potential reproductive toxin in massive doses. But consider this:

It is also present at about 25 ppm in seawater (75 ppm in the Med and very high in hypersaline lakes). They mine it from the surface of dried up lakes. In other words, a rubbish regulation. The US even has a range of recommended dietary allowances (min and max). However, the "borax substitute" isn't (it's more like washing soda and is not a persistent mildewcide) and will not serve the same function.

Yes, Patio Magic (benzalkonium chloride) will work, but not quite as well. A broad spectrum biocide. I've tested that as well. But it does not contain the same cleaning function, so you clean first and put the BAC in the rinse water.

Borax might be available in Taiwan, though identifying and finding it will be a challenge.

I'll probably have to deal with a similar problem when I get back to the UK. There was some mould, and its likely to have got worse over the winter unattended. While I will try cleaning, I expect I'll probably end up stripping the carpet out entirely, perhaps replacing it with closed cell foam.

Carpet has always struck me as stupid and insanitary stuff in most of its manifestations. (For example, I stripped it out of my car to rust proof and never felt a need to put it back) but a porous, very hard to clean and possibly biodegradable fibre matrix applied in inaccessible overhead locations seems particularly stupid on a plastic boat in Scotland
