Cleaning an oil spill in engine bilge

Job done :encouragement: and the engine bay smells delightfully of pomegranate and honeysuckle fairy liquid. SWMBO will approve. Thank you all who gave advice as I had visions of having to lift the boat again to open the drain bung and flush it all out.

Dont you just hate it when you've realised you've just worked ass about face!!!

Why is it on boat engines that not only is everything innaccessible, but you have to remove everything just to have a look-see?

So today was knuckle skinning day in the pouring rain and howling wind dismantling the port engine and removing compressors from both to send them in for recon

compressors / super chargers off and ready to be sent off.

Then came the laborious task of removing turbos' air intakes, various coolers etc to finally get to the oil cooler where I suspected the faulty gasket to be.

and there is the slight oil leak. Looks like the end cap needs to be replaced or retinned. Not a gasket afterall :nonchalance:

And look at all the coolant and oil back in my bilges :ambivalence: So I'll have to redo the bilges again. Does my head in, :ambivalence: :ambivalence: At least I have the method down pat. What a clown! :ambivalence:

It's my "persuader" Everytime a part doesnt want to play ball and come off nicely I pick it up, wave it, and threaten the engine with it. You'd be amazed how effective it is. Calms me down loads before I cause damage. I used to have a 4lb, but it's buried somewhere in the Land Rover. Round about where the EGR valves used to be. Ja hey, and I saw you also having a bit of road rage pushing your trolley around the Mulberry car park. Just because said white range rover was being driven by the Squaddie skippper is no reason to rear end him. I was going to say hello but you stormed off scowling. I take it your power steering troubles are even worse now too?

Don't worry BruceK still has oil in his bilge
No I dont. It's a few drops of hydraulic fluid from when I changed the pump. Nothing to get concerned about. I'll ride her up the beach and pull the bung plug out. Slap a bucket underneath and bring it over to put in your bilge. That'll keep you sweet for a couple months.

Of course on the disposal. However I can't get under the engines with a mop. I need something that would dissolve it and flow towards the bilge sump so that I can extract it. The engines sit in a recess boxed in by hefty support stringers and then ribbed underneath for reinforcement so even a flexible handled mop won't do it.
Use a degreaser spray from a car parts shop, or Meths, as alcohol will dissolve oil. Once you have it in the bliges, add Fairy liquid and hot water to flush it out.
