Cleaning Aluminium window frames

Hi.

I have tried cleaning the window frames with "Mothers Mag & Aluminium Polish" and it has taken some of the grime off, they aren't exactly gleaming. The frames are over 40 years old so the anodising has probably worn off years ago.

Can I use fine steel wool or something similar?

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Apparently you should spray (using a spray bottle) 1/4 cup of ammonia mixed with one cup of warm water after you have dusted off the window frame. Leave for 3 minutes and then use a non abrasive cloth to scrub the frame then rinse off.
