Tells us - fairly accurately - where we are.
I would have thought that the Navy would have GPS wouldn't you - just to keep them in the right bit of water, so to speak?

Perhaps the charts they were using were a little out of date and showed the entire area as pink?

So does ours. But we find it helps to know where you are going and what else is in the area.

Spoke to navy peeps yesterday who are directly involved, the waterway constantly moves and the border moves with it. There's no certainty that they were axshully in Iranian waters.

The trouble was in the definition of "right piece of water" The border there was last plotted on charts before the Iran/Iraq wars, but the agreement was that it should be the mid point of the main river channel, and that has been shifting , but is only observable at low water, thus only local knowledge and good visibility were essential, neither of which were available on the day. Besides, we only have one side of the story, Iran has a history of doing things which are not strictly correct, they would have wanted to make a big noise prior to the hand over of power, so who is to say what was correct?

I've seen the day when you would have taken some form of proactive stance on such an issue. Now look at you - even wondering whether the Iranians are tellng the truth and OH MY GOD asking Navy peeps for corrobotration/substantiation of facts - for goodness sake you failed parrot trainer - get off the fence and start being offensive again

My information was that the suggested border is based on a German word that refers to the middle of the deepest part of the river. The iranians only agreed grudgely after a long conflict. Perhaps they now consider it time to renegotiate.

Hmm, heard todays news claysie? Sems the gps sets used by the navy do work and the personnel can read them. Piracy is wot I call it, and I'd be the last to condone that!!
