Classification of super yacht

My friend is thinking of buying a yacht again ...........
it's classification is "ABS-Maltese Cross +A1 Yachting Service, AMS". What does this mean and does it still have to be MCA coded in order for him to charter it out ?

It sounds a very nice machine. Over 24m LLL. That all means that it is classsed to ABS-Maltese Cross +A1 Yachting Service, which is a classification under American Bureau of Shipping classification society rules, and in addition that it is classed to the AMS Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY2), which is the >24m classification policed by the UK's MCA. This means it is already allowed to be chartered, at least if it is flagged in a red ensign group register or in malta. Is it? Surely the answer is yes, but if not for some reason then it might need to be classified under additional rules of its flag state. Where is it flagged?

Thanks for the info - all double dutch to me though being a raggie ! It's registered in Kingston as far as I know. Pic attached. So this does this mean he doesn't need a pro skipper to move her ? (pro as in commercial hired skipper)

Ah, so he has bought Phantom, the big Gulf Craft. Refitted, and new paint by the looks of things (It's 10 yo). Good stuff! A huge amount of tonnage for the money

Not bought it yet ! He's never owned a boat before and is asking a lot of questions (understandably) !!

Re-fitted in 2009 I think and just re-launched this week after some more cosmetic work. We're thinking about snagging a ride to Barcelona as a sea trial if all the boxes can be ticked and my friend is happy.
Gotta think about where to keep her as well - he was thinking about buying that marina in the Hamble River and keeping her there !! He has some strange ideas my friend ........... but plenty of money !
