'Classic' mobo refit - but where?

Greetings,

Having spent recent years away from mobo ownership, I'm back in the swing of it, having bought a 1970s twin diesel boat which we kept going through last season, but which needs some reasonably significant work for this and subsequent seasons, namely:

• engines out (not too difficult as there's a big hatch above the saloon but will need a decent crane)
• fuel tanks out
• old plumbing and wiring out (I'll probably do this myself so need a DIY-friendly yard))
• fabricate and fit new fuel tanks
• service engines and gearboxes
• install new engine mounts
• re-install engines and gearboxes
• install new plumbing and wiring (probably mostly DIY - as above)

The boat is 35ft LOA, just under 12ft beam, with twin Perkins.

Sadly, the yard which did an excellent job on my last boat has now closed, and some I have approached have either not had the ability to crane, or didn't impress, so I'm looking for recommendations, ideally based on recent experience, for yards on the Thames, Medway, east coast (Boston or south thereof), or south coast (Weymouth or east thereof).

It needs to be a yard with decent folk charging reasonable prices...

OK, I'm taking this to mean that no-one can recommend anywhere. That's bad news. I hope the mods won't mind if I re-post this in the PBO forum in the hope someone there can offer some thoughts. (Mods, if you do, please delete this thread. Thanks).

Think you hit all at "going home time".... and we may need a bit more info as in ... if in the UK, where in the UK .... East, West, South North..... I can recommend great places in NE Scotland, but they are pretty much useless suggestions if you're on the South coast ...

New users posts have to be checked by one of the mods, so they don't go on the forum straight away, but when they do, they appear in the list based on the time they were originally posted, so they're often well down the page which can mean that nobody notices them. I suspect quite a few new users have given up on the forum for this reason.

I think you're in the right forum here, no-one on PBO pays someone else to do the work! On the other hand, if you want to make a new bimini out of an old deck chair, wire coat hangers and some duct tape, PBO forum is the place

Colin, when you make your first post it goes it doesn't appear on the forum but goes into moderators quarantine for a few days. When it does eventually get passed and appear, it retains its original date/time stamp, 22/2 in your case. Virtually everyone on this forum views in order of most recently updated thread, so your post is immediately destined to page 2 or worse. Hence no replies. Your second post just now bumped it up, as will this post, but this evening is the first time anyone on here will be seeing your post. So hang in there, and you might get some useful replies!

Wow, and built in the 70s? A timber boat, surely?
Sorry, I'm afraid that the few decent yards I could recommend for the jobs you need are all located in the Med.
But I for one would be interested to hear more about your boat and her refitting.

Several yards on the Hamble capable of this, Hamble Yacht Services would do an excellent job. Osmotec or Desty at Hamble Point.

In the Solent area you could find an 'open' yard and bring in the trades yourself too, this tends to be more cost effective.

Its a bit far from you but maybe Gweek bay in Cornwall?
they have an outstanding reputation; not sure about the costs.
