Contemplating import of open launch from US. 1947, 20 ft on own trailer, value £10k.
Fairly certain no VAT implications due to age.
Any duty or CE implications?

Quote for shipping from LA to Southampton £3.5k (Peters & May Ltd). Any comments/ alternatives?

I imported a 1952 sailing yacht form US, also used Peters and May who were a pleasure to deal with. I spent a lot of time talking to HMC&E about import tariffs. Eventually got them to levy import duty at 0% (!) and VAT at 5% because I persuaded them that it was of cultural and historic importance. Which is only the truth, but it did require quite a bit of documentary evidence. The C&E people were very helpful, but also quite clear on what was necessary. This saved me a lot of money.....

So I would be careful before assuming it's free of all tariffs. Peters and May might be able to help on this, but I did it myself.

PM me if you want me to dig out the form numbers etc.

That is interesting.
I spoke with HMRC and despite telling them it was 1947 they never mentioned the "cultural and historic interest" angle. What a surprise!
This morning I was looking at that very possibility, having thumbed through some company VAT tombs. I would be grateful for any particular angle that you felt helped to convince them. Perhaps you could PM me anything of note?
The duty part was quite modest at 1.7%.

Thanks for your response.

I should have said - subsequent to my original post I have been informed by HMRC that 17.5% VAT is due and 1.7% duty, both on the cost including shipping, hence my interest in your reply.
I would be grateful for any pointers that you feel helped HMRC be peruaded to the lower rate of VAT.
