Classic Forum - Closing Down Soon?

Heyho, well, since Mirelle has unfortunately gone, it's now very likely that IPC will close down the classic forum to save bandwidth costs?

And anway, be honest, most of people around here haven't actually got a remotely "classic" boat at all - it's just "old". Not at all the same thing as "classic" such as a nice J-class.

Also, let's face it, most old boats (even when new) were slow cold and impractical, with far more energy-efficient alternatives around these days. So, one can hardly imagine that promoting the ownership and repair of these less efficient vessels - whcih will need MUCH more than their fair share of non-renewable resources in the future merely to maintain them - is very responsible of IPC, either. Using all the teak etc on old ships and boats is partly how we got in this global warming mess in the first place.

In the meantime, Mirelle has made loads of posts, so until actual closure perhaps everyone could just refer back to those. Or buy a nice new boat instead with a fraction of the headaches and zero varnishing.
 
With new boat sales being predominantly of larger, wider hullforms, some of us have to keep our old classics afloat. It's also greener in that we're using organic material in our repairs (more carbon friendly than oil derived resins and plastics).

As for old wooden boats causing "Global Warming", it's been a while since Nelson's navy.....when we seriously denuded forrests to keep our ships afloat....I don't think even all the J's ever built used as much hardwood as HMS Victory.....

the planet has always warmed up and then cooled down before man was around!

Ah! But, that was oak, grown here, TCM is talking about all them there rainy forests that we are destroying for our mahogony, teak etc.

what a miserable git. I have an 'old' boat and it is warm.wood and not a classic but who cares. I enjoy my boat and would rather be content with a rain forest(scotland) than a global warming plastic pig
 
There's no need to be such a purist regarding the definition of classic. Take a hint from the world of classic cars - anything old and interesting is good enough by my definition.
Just call it the Old Boat Forum if you like.
The important thing is that people who have one a) tend to like old-fashioned boats rather than plastic ones, and b) have special needs regarding materials, treatments, supplies, etc, and it helps to have a forum where they can all meet together.
What's the point of posting a thread about wooden gaff jaws or Stockholm tar on a forum 99% inhabited by people who have never heard of them?
 
It is ok Roach. He is just feeling a little inadequate at not having the strength of character to involve himself in proper boats. He will be gone soon.

If tcm is trying to be funny he should go back to the lounge where his 'humour' may be appreciated.

In the meantime, can we please get back to what this Forum is all about.

If mirelle has gone, it would be a great shame. Being relatively new to these fora and indeed new to the boating world, I see losing such a mine of information and experience sad !
But I do pat mirelle on the back for following his morals !
Currently I am restoring my PLASTIC river cruiser and desperately trying to add some character ! I will be selling this vessel when it finished and hopefully then buy a real boat, probably made of wood !
It will be a MOTOR boat as I don't sail, thus I will select questions for the MOTOR BOAT FORUM.
Some questions will be of a PRACTICAL nature and will be posted on PRACTICAL BOAT OWNERS FORUM.
It will indeed be OLD/CLASSIC and if I feel the best answers to my questions will be gained from here I will post a question on the CLASSIC BOAT FORUM.
And if it is big enough one day I may decide to live on it and then may have questions for the LIVEABOARD LINK.
Am I wrong or is this not what the individual forums are for ? Please advise.
Why are some members so protective or THEIR forum ?
Oh! And you probably will never see me in the LOUNGE, I have much better things to do with my time !

She left this forum becouse of something she read in the lounge,dosent seem to be a reason to close this forum?

In any case helpful as she may have been most of my questions and others that posted were not answered by her,It may mean another question about deck sealent or links to helpful advice may take longer to get a reply.

I dident understand anyway what "raceisum" has to do with classic boats?? Ive never ever heard anyone make any coment that could be thought racist hear ever!

Unless being told as i was that i couldent stay in port garavan (Menton) becouse i had a wooden boat is racist???? Odd world glad i dont live in the UK

Haveing a wooden boat is far better than a plastic one (mostly) as theres always something needs varnishing/painting or fixing!!With a platic boat you might end up spending to much time and money in a cafe!!!
 
In reply to the first post at least I can tell my boat in crowd. Intersting point though. One thing is for sure at wooden boat is a labour of love, however, nearly always turns heads. For sure wooden boats will become fewer as most people to lack of skill and knowledge to maintain them. This is I believe why they have so many detractors, most believe they are a black art, also, talking to newish boating people, i wonder if instructor/ broker types appear to give the impression of older boats as unusable/unseaworthy somehow.

Classic – my boat became a classic more by accident – the surveyor declared it to be a classic in his survey report….. It appears that an old boat well maintained is a classic to all, one that is not isn’t.
 
I've owned various wooden boats, 2 of them gaffers praps even a classic. Also sailed extensively on various classic boats. Had lots of fun with them and was lucky to have the time to spend maintaining them

I shall always miss the warm glow of a parafin lamp on varnished wood and bright enamel down below on a dark night, and the special smells that come with a traditional boat

I won't miss the leaky decks, cramped heads and galley, lack of refrigeration and basic comforts, rubbish rigging and jamming caulking into a garboard whilst bent double in a cold muddy puddle. I certainly no longer have th time nor inclination to maintain a wooden boat

I can now keep a set of decent going ashore clothes onboard without them getting covered in tar/oil/lead (red or white, sir?)/mildew and can keep ordinary cows milk fresh for days on end - yes really!

So for some people this forum is a bit of nostalgia, and from time to time we can throw in something to help. After all, some of us have been there ourselves. You can suggest that some of us infrequent visitors 'do not having the strength of character to involve themselves in proper boats' but this just goes to show how narrow your own perspective has become

Good luck to you all in keeping your cherished old craft going, I'm likely to be one of the people who will come along to admire them. Try to keep your sense of humour intact - it was only a wind-up!
