Hi Even,
I notice your from Caithness, I spent a couple of years up in Golspie when I was at prep. School. The best time of my life, we ran wild in the woods and beaches. Snow nearly every year. A truly wild and beautiful place.
I got hooked on R/c slope soarers, all self built. The ultimate in simplicity, just two servos, no engine. My son bought an ready built heli, it lasted a couple of weeks before a terminal crash........story over, not possible to rebuild it.
Seems to be a lots on forum items who started with r/c, then went on to boats!

I'd certainly welcome a Classic Boat type forum.
I've had some classic dinghies, but my cruiser is grp and she takes quite enough effort for me ta very much.
That doesn't stop me admiring wooden boats, the world would be a much poorer place without them and their kind owners.

What is a classic boat, before a certain date, after a certain age, from a period of history?

I think it's an iconic design, could even be brand new. But there have been periods of time when horrid designs were built.
The sixties and seventies spring to mind......just when GRP became common.'The problem with fibre glass is that you can mould it into any shape...'
I don't agree with the ' nothing's naffer than a plastic gaffer' lobby. How else is an ordinary person going to own a beautiful classic design?
Classic design normally incorporates the best of traditional design, mixed into the best of modern construction materials.

I think the posts were a bit misleading; PhillM is rather modest about his boat,an immaculate Cheverton Caravelle which has been featured in magazines, she looks lovely; now hopefully recovering from a deep refit.

Can't the mods just give us a new category? ... Doesn't have to be called Classic Boat as long as we all know what it is - 'Interesting Older Boats'? ... 'Wooden Classics'? ... 'Ole Tore-outs!' ? ..... anyone?

It's not a matter of them "grabbing" it but the contract both parties agreed to having an agreement not to use certain words in titles. (or possibly to operate a forum in direct competition ---- but those clauses tend to be difficult to enforce)

Understood, but that can't prevent other enthusiasts for lovely wooden boats publishing something or creating a discussion forum; personally I find the pics in ' Classic Boat ' at least as much, probably more of a turn-on than the contents of ' Playboy '; - ' I'd like a go on it but don't fancy the long term costs ! '
