Classic anchor windlass need chain?

It might be a recent trend but current gypsies are marked, embossed, with the size and sometimes the spec to which the size refers (ISO or DIN). I have found I need to take the whole gypsy off to find the mark. If it is a very old windlass it might be imperial :(.

If it is a very old windlass it might be imperial ......I think it will be so what size chain is near 10 mm and can I still get it?
The chap I bought the Yacht off had 8mm on it that totally didn't fit...what a plonker!

Imperial chain is available from America but whether imperial American and British chain was the same link size - I have no idea, before my time:( America is an inordinately expensive place to ship from.

I'd be inclined to take the gypsy off the windlass and see if you can match it to anything in stock in a chandlers or lifting equipment retailer. Once you fix the size you can then look for that quality in a gal finish. If you need a current imperial sizing then one option, find the Rocna importer and ask if they also import CMP Titan chain, it comes in both imperial and metric sizes and being the middle of your winter - maybe they can get something to match in ready for the summer. But there must be a number of old windlass/gypsies and I cannot think you are unique (well I'm sure you are unique - but I meant you problem cannot be isolated).

It might be as possible to pick up a metric gypsy that fits? Measure your shaft, better take some pictures and get onto the windlass suppliers. All the windlass suppliers, I think all unless they want to deny themselves the American market, carry both imperial and metric gypsies. There is a chance one will fit - but you will need to supply them the dimensions of yours. It might also be possible to take one of their, non fitting, gypsies, sleeve it to fit yours.

But this all sounds like a lot of hard work:(
