Class 1 certificate with STCW endorsement

On another forum, the OP asked how one would obtain a Class 1 certificate,re; Tugs, already having completed a number of STCW courses. Any feedback would be welcome.:)

STCW95, comprises a suite of 4 courses, including First aid, Firefighting & sea survival.

Required by all seafarers 'going to sea', including hairdressers on board.
class 1 is entirely different I think.

STCW95 is actually the Internationally agreed standards for the training certification and watchkeeping for seafarers. My Masters C of C is issued under the provisions of STCW95. A whole raft of courses and qualifications come under STCW95. Best check with the MCA website which ones are applicable.

First you need to get a Officer of the Watch(OOW) ticket(class 4); that needs a cadetship which will take 3 years(sponsorship is available), or about 18 months if you have a degree with suitable technical content and can get on a graduate conversion course(sponsorship is available for this also, although it's less widely available). Then after you do a minimum of 18 months seatime you can sit the exams for the Mate's ticket(class 2). After a further 18 months seatime you can sit for the Master's ticket(class 1). These are minimums and there is no guarantee you will pass the exams at first sitting; if you fail the examiners often stipulate that you cannot attempt the exam again until you gain more seatime.

The basic STCW courses(basic firefighting, personal safety & social responsibility, basic first aid, personal survival techniques) are a small but mandatory part of getting the OOW ticket.

Thanks for the feedback. The OP has the following courses completed under STCW'95 , PSSR,First Aid,PST,Fire Fighting(Basic). He has to complete Fire Fighting(Advanced) and then apply to a Nautical college. He seems to be interested in operating Tugs(Inshore and Inland) and while a Masters ticket may seem OTT,when a restricted ticket would probably suffice,he would rather have options.
