The early Yanmar 1GM 's use sae30 grade engine oil in the hurth/yanmar hybrid gearbox that they use. It says it on the plate and manual.
My 2QM15 (which is older) yanmar's hurth/Yanmar hybrid gearbox says to use atf on the plate and in the manual.
Must admit it is confusing.
But then the 2QM also says to use sae30 grade oil in the engine and Barrus/Yanmar say to use sae15/40 multigrade oil. But if questioned further about the sae30 option that is in the handbook they dont know what to say.
Ohh dear.....

The manual says the gearbox oil should be changed every two hundred hours.

I think that I shall put ATF in it, on balance of all the different answers. My last question therefore is whether this in a worst case scenario could cause problems? There will of course be a trace of the old oil left in the gearbox - but I would hope that the quantity will be small enough not to cause problems when mixed with ATF?

And what about the oil seals - would they be different according to the type of oil used?

My guess is that it won't be a problem. My engine is only 10hp but the gearbox has been working for about 15 years now with no sign of trouble or leaks. I doubt the oil seals would mind because I think they're both mineral oils...

...BUT if it was my boat, I'd be looking to get something in writing from ZF / Hurth if at all possible!

Good luck!

Marine gearbox oils

My Petter books are mislaid and a mate in the Caribbean is having trouble with the SOM gearbox on his Petter Mini-6. The clutch plates keep losing adjustment (presumably they are slipping and wearing out) The complaint is that the box has only done 250 hours since it was last adjusted and now forward gear is slipping again. Has anyone tried ATF in one of these? Does anyone know whether new clutch plates can be obtained from companies other than Petter? Best regards from Davey.

my petter book says mineral diesel oil in the box, so after thinking ang on a mo their sposed to be atf I checked what was in the box. It was engine oil so as part of a service I emptied it and refilled with new mineral diesel engine oil
My boat was a one owner from new so I'm happy not to argue
I do agree with others about low revving engines the petter only does around 2500 rpm max unless you want to blow the knackers out of it ! In the past when I serviced customers engines and boxes they all used atf
re some one wrote they found brown thin stuff
The **** in the bottom could be a build up of condensation and or water ingress if the boat has taken on water but ofcourse if a box is over heated it will burn the oil
