My Arco self tailing winch uses what i have always called circlips to retain the jaw and rope guide. However, as I want to service it and not worry about the circlips springing off and falling over the side I need some spares. (I've taped an old dinghy sail to the guard rails in the past and been very careful!)

However, the circlips I want are continuous spirals of metal that open up and 'screw on' until they close in position. Trying circlips on ebay all I get is the kind that open with circlip pliers and then close. What are my spiral clips called and where can I get some in 5/32 (29mm) 11/16 (43mm) and 7/32(58mm) size?

Yes, but the trouble is, that doesn't tell you what they're called. It covers several types of retaining ring, including what we call 'circlips' (and others call C-Clips, snap rings or even Jesus clips*). Their spiral retaining ring they call a 'Spirolox retaining ring', which they're quite entitled to do, although the fact that the company was called Spirolox might just have a bearing on that...like a Jubilee clip's being a hose clip, but not necessarily the other way round. But what we seem to be talking about is a spiral retaining ring.

* presumably held on by pure faith.

Not sure what the correct name is, I've always called them spiral retaining rings. Another supplier is RotorClip.
To avoid losing them I stick a finger into the socket then unwind with the other hand, then if or when they ping off you still have it caught.
Another way is to use Eric Hiscock's method of working inside a large plastic bag so that any springs etc. don't disappear.
