And errr, Holyhead the first time I called them....

Coastguards first reply to Little Ship was.... with laughter in the background.

"Vessel calling Holyhead Please restate your name"

Tom

Not quite in the same league, but I was once nav'ing a boat called Favona, and called up Ramsgate for permission to enter. Back came the response "Taverna, Ramsgate, over."

Our club main rescue boat had been called 'XXXX Mayday' since years ago when hand held VHF on small open boats was but a dream of American film makers.

It was only when members found themselves making calls 'XXXX Mayday' that they twigged and a very quick name change followed, as far as I know the CG didn't have time to comment.

One of the best names I've seen was the ocean voyaging Wharram 'Cooking Fat'; a bit of a challenge for a tired overworked CG ! :)

Am I the only one who thinks of this lady as "Roger"? She says it quite a lot, and I was always taught that the word Roger holds no special meaning in VHF as it would be ambiguous (confirm, affirmative, understood etc should be used instead).

This pretty much agrees with what I was taught

ROGER, RECEIVED, ROMEO, COPY
I have received your last transmission satisfactorily, radio check is loud and clear. Romeo has the same meaning but is used mainly in Australian Maritime Operations.
For Maritime VHF Copy does not mean the same as Roger or Received. It is used when communications between 2 other stations which includes information for your station have been overheard and received satisfactorily.

The CG occasionally get their own back. We once heard someone ask "have you got the Lat & Long of the Bawdsey aerial?" and the young lady replied "Yes, thank you sir".

Many years ago there was Nicholson (I think) with some distinctive plumbing. A lady charterer reported her embarrassment at having to radio and say "this is Pinkaloo".
