...if you're going to have a boat, and if you're going to insist on breaking down just outside Langstone Harbour on one of the busiest Saturdays this summer, and if you insist on calling up Solent Coastguard on Ch16 and get to speak to the nice lady, you're going to wish from the bottom of your soul that you'd listened to your mates when they told you that calling your boat "Bikini Bottoms" was not a good idea..... :D:D

I often wonder how much thought regarding radio procedures goes into the naming of boats(especially mobos):D

There are certainly some boat's names that cause a titter to run through QHM Portsmouth's Harbour Control Room.;)

There is one on the solent named "slartibartfast", obviously the owner was / is a fan of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy - it was once on a rally where we were the committee boat and so I asked them to pronounce the yacht's name phonetically - we got a very short answer which was nothing like the name of the yacht :) :) :) ;)

We did once wonder about changing Avocet's name to "Viking Trader" (That being the Ro-Ro that used to use Fleetwood dock occasionally)!

I'm currently re-reading the excellent book about HMS Vernon, the mine warfare establishment.

There's just been mention that one of their drifters, 'Fidget' rescued a lot f men from Dunkirk; one of the grateful soldiers christened his daughter 'Fidget', seems an excellent name for a girl or a boat !

Less VHF friendly names I've seen;

Red Alert

That Sinking Feeling

and of course Shy Talk...

And now you've got me wondering what a 60sih year old lady named Fidget has spent the last few decades telling people she's called... Actually, more the 1st few, at school.

I do like the name though.

Saturday certainly bought out the VHF numpties

Mayday, mayday, mayday
This is xxxxx
Can anyone hear me?

SCG: xxxxx are you in immediate and grave danger?

Much chat later with Bembridge tasked to attend

SCG: xxxx SC Sir be aware that this call is NOT a Mayday.

Oh and Bembridge LB calling SCG for a radio check on 16 :D:D:D

Turns out their engine had packed up (saily boat ) Enough wind to sail from the other saily boats out there.

Hears bits of several pan pans, not a single one following proper procedure. Apart for the Doris calling Betty, are you there? sort of thing.

Bet the CG love hot sunny weekends..

You could almost hear the coastguardette biting back her giggles.

This summer, I had the pleasure of mooring in Fort Gaios, Paxos, nest to a German on a 32 footer.......You'll never guess the name of his boat...:

TITANIC

I kid you not........

We have a Prince Eugen in the harbour, which at present seems to be following Bismark, sadly I believe the original owner died.
