To Vic, Sorry if I offended you by saying that you are tone deaf..........But come on now, surely if someone thinks the Banshee like cacophony that eminates from a seagull outboard motor is sweet music........what other expalnation could there be?
**************************************************

Just dont repat these comments with regard to Detroits or you will have someone from Aberdeen and Edinburgh on your case.......Now they are music...only excelled by the clatter of two 9 cylinder Ruston AO engines at full chat!!!!!!!!!!

Alas never to be heard again!!!!!!

I believe that I should withdraw permanently.

I don't believe that's appropriate at all. You've expressed an opinion, one that I've disagreed with, but so what? That's your view, and you're entitled to express it.

This issue has spilled over from another thread, where there was an active troll, but it wasn't C1, IMHO, at least, not in this case (I haven't read all his other threads). Unfortunately, you've got yourself all wound up about it, which is what the other troll intended in the first place.

Why not stay? Nobody's going to hold your opinion on C1 against you.

Well, I hope you wont do that, there is no profit in it.......We are all capable of flying off on one now and again, and for some reason I seem to have rattled your cage. I deliberately didn't respond to you directly until now, mainly because I didn't want to have a flamer with you. I see no reason for you to leave the forum, In my view, you have done nothing unforgiveable, and I think you should stay because I am sure that you have plenty to share with the other forumites, even if you think that this particular one is a total dickhead. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif...............Detroit??.....Detroit???

Ah! I know what you mean..........Detritous! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Don't go eyehavit. 213 posts since 2005 demonstrates a remarkable restraint. Crusty boy's 600 odd in a matter of weeks demonstrates a degree of verbiage that marks him out as an archetypal yacht club bore.

Detroit Diesel, engine, made by GM, two stroke, uses a supercharger to make the compression good enough to fire, the big ones have turbos as well. Used extensively in the oil field, because it is a 2 stroke it fires every stroke and conseqently the bangs merge to give a lovely raucous roar. The 16 cylinder ones are particularly lovely to listen to on full chat! the little 4 cylinder ones used for pumps and little gennies used to have a hydraulic pump that had a long handle to pump a hydraulic reservoir that woukd then spin a hydraulic starter motor, if the little beastie was in good order a few pumps would do the trick, if it wasnt i would let my angolan helpers do the cardiac exercise!

I think my favourite engine "noise" has to be the the sixteen cylinder Napier Deltic engine.........those things make the hair stand up on the back of my neck!

We had a couple of Detroit 4s in the company boat. It was my responsibility in the winter to sort out it´s service etc. Even the 4s made a nice noise. The boat was a 65ft heavy ketch made of mahogney in Italy. Orig. called Linda, named by our lot Rajada (squall). I prepped it to cross to US for a few seasons. A row in the company resulted in it being sold. Wonder where she is now?

Sorry Fred drift.....Keep at it Chrusty.I still can´t figure what triggered this thread.-A

What a ridiculous thread.
C1 has said some things I agree with, many amusing interjections, and doubtless many comments I might disagree with but probably haven't read. That's what happens on an interesting forum - keep it up!

Even sillier than starting a thread like this is to then talk about resigning in a huff just because a few people disagree.
Do we have a Children's Section here?

What is it about big diesels that get a lot of us blokes going a bit wobbly?? I have to say, that as well as big diesels, I am rather fond of the likes of Lister JP's and Russel Newberry's

I once visited a canal rally with a friend of mine, and there was a chap there with a beautiful BCN style tug, she was fitted with an RN 18hp twin, and he had the engine room doors open and you could see the engine just ticking over, I was a bit in awe of it, I don't mind saying, I could just about hear it, and the flywheel seemed to be going so slow you could almost count the revolutions!

Regarding this thread?? all a bit sad really, as I said, a storm in a teacup. Still, one can try, but I'm afraid you can't please all the people all of the time. Thanks for your words of encouragement, I probably do spend more time on this and other forums than I ought to, but my health being what it is, some days it's all I can manage to do, though I would much rather be sailing, or in my workshop tinkering.

Thanks Clifford, Yes a really silly thread, and totally in the wrong place. I will confess to feeling just a tad upset about it at first, that is why I went away and gave it some thought before I replied, but I soon realised that really, I hadn't done anything much to warrant such an attack. lets draw a line under it and move on. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll take it you have me down as that as well.
Never been in a yacht club, my boy. What a preposterous thing to assume.
Unfortunately there is a strange belief on here that a forumite with few posts is a wise old bird and one with many has nothing of value to offer.

[/ QUOTE ] Not a bit of it. But perhaps I was a bit forthright and apologies to Chrusty. Truth be told it was your (Chrusty's) post on the for sale forum that wound me up, nothing better to do than comment on the sale price of something you have no intention of buying. Anyway, apologies.

Apology accepted, not that you needed to apologise, my post on the for sale forum may have been a bit ascerbic, and if it offended you then I apologise also.

To Lakey, you had best get down to the lounge, because somebody is refering to you as just a mere sailor! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Funny that ... as while tied up to a pontoon in a popular spot we noticed a few tenders going about their ways. First noticeable one was pushed along by a common 4 stroker and was an unpleasant noise and loud, followed closely by another tender with a similar size 2 stroker. The 2 stroker was noticeably quieter and less harsh on the ear.
Later a seagull powered tender went by and I kid not, was a better sound than all the 4 strokers and in fact less noisy than a couple of them.

Yes, I suppose in reality it's all very subjective, my little Suzuki 4 stoke is very quiet and smooth at least to me it is. Anyway, I was only teasing Vic a little and it was in reference to another post.
