We have just bought a Princess 30 based at Caversham. For years we have spent Christmas Day Lunch at various pubs on the Broads. Any ideas of pubs which do Christmas Lunch, within easy walk of the river, <span style="color:black"> </span> would be appreciated.
 
Go downstream a little to Sonning. I bet both The great House and The Bull do a Christmas Dinner. Don't expect a help on this matter from Brayman. he spends December 25th muttering Bah! and Humbug to himself.

The Griffin pub does good food. Over Caversham bridge from Reading and turn left and it's on the left. It's got river frontage but I'm not sure what the access is like - could be worth a look.

If you are in T&K then a brisk walk up to the pub in Playhatch is what I would recommend - not the Shoulder of Mutton; the next one (could be The Crown); the one with the conservatory dining area.
 
Go alittle further down stream to Wargrave. The George is on the river with moorings. Don't know what Christmas dinner is like but the food is normally OK.
 
Whatever you do -

Look at the winter closure programme - over on www.visitthames.co.uk. The version I looked at recently dated August showed that the river was effectively closed from Cookham to Caversham for the WHOLE winter (November to March).

In previous years there has been a Christmas open period but due to the "electrification" of Temple, Hurley and Shiplake, many of us will be locked in.......

Ah, you're in my country now when it comes to pubs and restaurants in and around Caversham. The pub at Playhatch is the Crown and is highly recommended. The Griffin is ok, but an interesting one close to Caversham Bridge is the Moderation on the Reading side. An unremarkable looking pub which used to be just a boozer, but has now changed out of all recognition and I am glad to say seems to be doing very well. It is more like a wine bar, but the food is very good indeed.

You might want to try Pipers, formerly Pipers Island. For some reason this does not seem to have taken off since refurbishment recently, but is very nice inside. I did talk to them earlier this year about bringing a party in from the river and they were happy for me to moor up at the back of the island.

The problem will be whether any of these open on Christmas day. I am pretty sure that the Great House at Sonning does, but the cost is high and I have heard that the staff can be less than enthusiastic about working on that day, but I suppose that applies to everywhere.

Bit of a problem of course if the locks are closed.

Staff working Christmas and New Year are often on triple time, that concentrates their minds a bit. Most places seem to manage it for lunch.

You've been listening to BoatOne, I only told him that to avoid having to buy him a meal!
We were away at the weekend, Friday to Monday, Boat Show then Cruise Ship to Belgium and back yesterday.

Thanks for your help - Crown looks good (as do the staff - wife says that guys are as good looking as the girls) Thanks also for the town pub info. Coming from the Broads didn't think about lock closures - thanks for that too.
 
As you have responded to Byron thanking him for info re the Crown - which he has not recommended then you have "Lakesailored" me. As you are new to this game, which is a bit like Mornington Crescent, you are forgiven /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
