Christmas and New Year in the bay.

It was within the bay itself, started at 12 and finished at 2, from the looks and how I think it worked - was the number of laps with the handicap starting time taken off, ie everyone raced for 2 hours but if you had a hadicap start time fo 12:30 they only took the number of laps you did in 1 hour 30 mins ???

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as this is how I think it works and if we had raced, how I would have worked it out!

Cheers

Where was the pursuit race? We came down to Flat Holm today, but only saw one other boat.

Seven CYC boats went out on on the 31st. We went out at 12-30 and headed off around the Holms. 13-18kts true wind and the rain stopped as we left the barrage. A nice sail, followed by a gallon of mulled wine, a great end to the sailing year.
I did the pursuit race on a mates boat, unseasonally warm and dry, we could have done with some more wind. It was fun to see Oppies and a Beneteau 50 racing toether!
The pursuit format is, race control gives everyone a start time based on their boats handicap and you race until the finish time.

Great links, how did you get on today ?

I had a lack of crew so went down with the wife and kids, watched for a bit and gave the boat a bit of a tidy up !

Not well, but then not seriously either.

You are broadly right about the format. We are each given an individual starting time that should mean we all end up at the finish line together at 1400 hrs. We dont of course, and its almost always some sort of dinghy that wins overall.

To make it fair they should have a Holms race with dinghys too and take the average:D Actually i don't think thery venture outside. We used to dinghy sail across channel when i learnt 25 years ago.

Oh yes they do. We had someone in a big laser make a right mess of our PY fleet a couple of series ago.

Problem with handicaps is that at best they only work for a narrow performance envelope. They cant make for a fair competition between a dinghy and a cruiser.

That said it was nice to have all sorts of boats out in the New Years race - sort of club community spirit.

100% agree. As I have said before, I'm not a serious racer, if I were I would only race in one design series. None of the handicap systems I have raced under have worked 100%.
Our Boxing day +1 race and, I believe, the CBYC pursuit race are more for fun and an excuse to get out and sail. In that aspect I think both worked really well this year.
