Our top loading fridge has always presented a problem trying to find a cover that could be lifted without a projection or recess on top to trap dirt.

Inspiration struck resulting in a chopping board secured to the fridge cover. With a recess around the edge, it can easily be lifted and there is a decent seal on the fridge.

I have made one out of a piece of mahogany which happens to have a very nice grain. Accepting that, in use, it will become scarred, is there any way of enhancing the grain without the risk of tainting food?

Was expecting another ‘can I use one as a backing pad for [insert critical, high load-bearing, component here]’ thread! ?

Danish oil or Tung oil will bring out the colour and grain of Mahogany. You would probably need to rub it in on occasion to cover knife cuts.
But it dries quickly, is clear, cheap and easy to apply. I don't think it will taint food.

It's worth searching for "tung oil" and "msds".

I would be reluctant to use it on a chopping board.. See Section 8.2.

Get a separate board [or even better a nice piece of solid wood] especially for chopping on, you will use it more often and for tasks other than prepping veg.

You can buy food safe oils for just the purpose of treating work surfaces and chopping boards, Google is your friend or Axminster Tools, other retailers are available.

A while ago I watched a video which included an American guy making chopping boards using multi-coloured hardwood timber 1.1/4" square lengths packed together and glued, then cut across the grain to about 2".for the full length then glueing several cubes together making a very attractive pattern of colours; Much sanding and final trimming to a 18" size block followed.
I can't remember whether Linseed oil or similar was used to coat and dry or whether it was an epoxy finish,; but looked a work of art and sold for around $90. As I recall this project started as a way of using up scrap timber from his other business in timber- Possibly a boat-builder.
